My best friend Cairo is in a bit bother right now,suddenly collapsed 1pm yesterday dinner time just pottering about on the grass in front of my home,him screaming in pain and cudnt stand,back right leg. Rushed him to emergency vet screaming all the time. they quickly gave him pain relief and examined him,she said after ultrasound may have an enlarged heart ventricle and stomach lining was way thicker than should be,said he would need to go to specialist hospital..they took him at 4pm and i followed.
On arrival they informed would be £3500-£5000 for admittance then whatever treatment.Left him with them and went home.
Male specialist there was fantastic,said he would do a CT scan and full check over,he rang me at 6pm yest and said heart specialist says no heart problems and stomach lining no where as bad as they thought and has no cancer but has a full blockage aortic thrombosis in rear right leg.
Only option is blood thinners to try and solve the problem.
Rang me 10am today (cairo's birthday) and said he's comfortable but still no blood flow in his leg and next 72hrs will be critical.
Goes everywhere with me,utter devastation doesnt come close.

todays update ..he walking a bit on back right leg but using his thigh muscles to drag the lower half..struggling to get oral medication in him as he's biting,trying to put food into him but getting aggressive when go near his mouth..better news than i was expecting but still needs to regain full blood flow into the leg before he's out of danger.

Todays update,he's eating a bit,he's been outside the vets,done both toilet duties,still slightly dragging back right toes until he gets them flat but weight bearing on his leg ok and walking. Going to wean his pain medication from today. Specialist says all looking positive. Blood clot was caused through Protein losing nephropathy (PLN) is a condition where the kidneys lose protein into the urine. Also a Vitamin B12 deficiency, occurs when dogs are unable to absorb B12 appropriately, leading to reduced levels in the bloodstream.Both can be managed with medication. Specialist says he's improving and so heres hoping as after he went in on thurs i didnt think i'd get him back. On the plus side ive lost 7lbs in 3 days and now what i weighed when i was 17.

Hope he pulls through. How old is he?

My last dog was a Patterdale, and at about ten years old, he developed what they thought was prostate cancer, and they said he'd probably have a few months left, and that the issue would become that the cancer would grow and block the bladder so he wouldn't be able to pass u rine, but said that they may be able to give muscle relaxants which might prolong his life.

So he gradually became symptomatic, and was tried on v alium, which had to be stopped because he was all over the place with it.

Then one Saturday morning he was unable to pass anything and I had no choice but to take him to be put down. He was otherwise an healthy dog, but for diabetes which was well managed.

sorry to hear george..i was prepared for the worst and was dreading him seeing me then putting him to sleep..you cannot express what this trauma does to a person until it occurs.

Rico, I was in the vets blubbing my eyes out.

And what made it worse, was that because I'd gone at short notice, the receptionist wasn't aware he was likely to have to be put down, and she'd been patting him as he'd been jumping up at the reception desk, and when she found out, she started crying too.

i was traumatised from friday..dont matter how hardy you think you are..its soul destroying so i know how you must have felt.

I watched an interview with a vet. He says they want friendly words and reassurance when
the time comes. They don't want to see you upset, you can collapse afterwards. I took
my neighbours cat and just stroked her and talked to her, I did weep afterwards.

Wishing him all the best, hope he pulls through. I've had 2 bearded collies, both had to be put down. One just hemorrhaged completely out the blue, the second had epilepsy, started cluster fits, went to emergency vets and he was put to sleep. Cried more for them than I did at my dads funeral. Its totally heartbreaking, they become so much part of the family.

had 3 dogs over the years one had cancer, Yorkie  old age ,last one a greyhound kidney disease , brutal ,  took ages to get over losing her , I wont get any more Dogs

nowadays pet insurance a worthwhile expense. vets big business and another reason not to buy pedigree mutts. they are often in-bred and unhealthy from the start. dog breeders a menace

my ex fell in luv with a husky, as many do and paid good money for one. it was always off its food and lethargic. had cancer and died aged 14 months. very distressing all round and she buried it herself

Nothing worse than an unwell dog...had ours put down at home 3 years ago....Mrs said she would never have another......within 4 months we bought Harry...A ginger Cocker spaniel. More characteristics than you would care for...Full of love and affection.

good luck cairo ,drove past  a bloke walking a dog this morning , alsation type poor dog had a huge growth on his leg about the size of a bag of sugar, bloke facing a tough decision !

good news,can go get him at 4-30 today..few things to manage but thats to be expected .

set off 4:10,im near the tyne tunnel..boldon a mile other side..been a bad accident on tunnel approach my side and area totally gridlocked..yu cudnt mek it up..so back home.

my dog is coming up 17 years old ,deaf as a post and cant see very well either sleeps most of the time , took him to durdle door  in dorset 3 or 4 weeks ago , cliffs with stairs cut into the ground leading down to the beach steep as foo k  had to carry the little fella down and up  nearly finished me going back up  !

anyways..he's home but struggling with rear right leg..he dragging it and cant straighten paw..its pityful to see as he loves pottering round the grass field outside mine drive..just hope it improves.

Dogs are remarkable characters. Let's hope the blood thinners do the trick.
