There are plenty who don't inspire much confidence when having a bet but there are two especially who have been my Nemesis
over the decades who I've had strong aversions to and I've recently been glad to see the back of, in Johnston & Channon.
It's not just the horrendous luck I've had backing their selections but the ones I've had chinned (which have also cost me
huge bets) by their rank outsiders who've had apparently NO chance!

Their handicappers struggle to run back to back races alike!
They'll run a total stinker, then next time somehow bounce back at 33/1 when nobody's looking...scuppering a well
fancied one of mine!

Watching the TV and I can see that my horse looks likely to be getting tangled up in duel with a Johnston inmate
and I get a knot in my gut as I KNOW they're gonna be outgunned...however unlikely it looks - it's very much a
cliché but it's so true...and mentally/financially agonising!

Both those guys have now been succeeded by their sons and I'm still so hungover by their fathers' jinx that I must
concede I'll not even give them a fair crack of the whip.

Just as bad over the jumps is Jonjo - I can't say I've ever seen so many outsiders bolt up after 'inexplicably'
pulling up in their previous runs!
His jumpers often seem to negtiate their obstacles in such an awkward manner...and that's been evident since the
days of Keen Leader - it'll also be the case with Jonjo in the future when he retires.

I hate bad grammar - in duel? I meant duelling!Blush

Unless they listed or Group I avoid.

Then some are avoided even then!

Glad you mentioned Johnston and Channon Herb, another two i seldom play tbh,Johnston mostly place back admittedly…seldom tho
Report TommyWestofLanark September 11, 2026 12:40 PM BST
Don't mind Johnston & Channon but take Herbie's point about Charlie's running a stinker. What I do is put a saver on it NTO.

Well...it's Tesco curry tonight then......luckily I'm off to stay with my son in Florida next week for 90 days, so I won't have a chance to chase it !
Best regards to all those I chat to .....
