They haven't found a hole have they?
Report Regbutler September 10, 2026 4:42 PM BST
Just heard them say something like the tide went out a bit later than forecast, and they have got to reconfigure the course...so not far off the truth

Irons, probably a nice day out for the locals though
Report lead on September 10, 2026 4:51 PM BST
Surely the tide goes out at the same time any given day/date?
Report Regbutler September 10, 2026 4:51 PM BST
Great big puddle at the furlong pole!!!
Report Regbutler September 10, 2026 4:53 PM BST
Lead on, tides all controlled by the moon i believe, but you are right

That'll be the moon to blame thenGrin
Report DixieDean60 September 10, 2026 5:05 PM BST
Pedant alert - The sun is also to blame, although its effect on the tides is about half that of the moon Cool
Report duffy September 10, 2026 5:08 PM BST
Fair enough, I'll retract my over the top criticism of our only moon, up until now it has generally done a good job, it didn't deserve that.Grin

Will depend on the rise and fall of the tide, here we have the sea goes down for 6 hours then comes in for 6 hours, More of a danger would be if the horses hit a soft patch of sand, but no doubt they will of inspected the sand before racing..
Report jerseyboy September 10, 2026 5:26 PM BST
Plus here the tide does NOT come in at the same time each day.
Report duffy September 10, 2026 5:28 PM BST
Funny that, it doesn't where I live either
Report swiftynifty September 10, 2026 7:30 PM BST
tides usually move by around half an hour each time. sometimes due to dropping internet connection the moon and sea are unable to communicate and tide times will vary.
Report breadnbutter September 10, 2026 7:52 PM BST
Joking aside, wind has a big effect on tide, can hold it back and also create a racing incoming tide.

The wind can blow the sea down coast create a bulge then change direction and it cause a tidal surge.

Don't mind Laytown, had a few bets, backed the bled last time out winner, my Internet connection flakes out around 15:30 - 16:00 and it had been a busy day so headed off to the kitchen.
It's a unique day and nowt to knock imo.
Report Regbutler September 10, 2026 8:21 PM BST
Jersey and Duffy, I wasn't suggesting the tide comes in and out at the same times each day...I live about 200 yards from the Bristol Channel where the rise and fall of the tide is apparently the 2nd biggest difference in the world...on a daily basis, if that makes sense?
What I was saying is that I buy a "tide times book" every year,it's for fishermen really, that gives you a precise time of day for each high and low tides, 2 per day, for each calendar day of the year.

Comedy gold racing tbh.
Report breadnbutter September 10, 2026 8:45 PM BST
Hence the saying "Bristol ship shape" 18ft drop at low tide and everthing needed tied up right and tight.
Report leif September 10, 2026 8:54 PM BST
If you take a trip on a boat from the harbour to you see the markers showing where the tide rises at its highest.
it's considerable.
The SS Great Britain is well worth a visit if you get down that way.
Report Regbutler September 10, 2026 10:54 PM BST
B and b and leif...both correct
Sometimes I'm on the seafront and literally cannot believe in an hour or so, how far out the water has gone...someone the other day tried to tell me it's all to do with Hinkley Nuclear power plant opposite, near Minehead, causing the tides rising and falling so quick...
Report Rico-Dangleflaps September 10, 2026 11:02 PM BST
tide ranges have big variations during the course of every mth.
Report swiftynifty September 10, 2026 11:22 PM BST
Reg, nuclear plants need a lot of water for cooling. When Hinkley C is finally operating it could draw all the water from the Bristol Channel.
Report swiftynifty September 10, 2026 11:27 PM BST
I once heard that similar happened with a nuclear plant in India, it caused the Ganges to dry up. I've since found out that was a turban myth.

so if the bristol channel is the second fastest tidal range,
ware i live is morecambe bay n that must be the qwickest, tidal range
then from what i have heard locally, and nearby is heysham nuclear power
station, barrow in furness, ware nuclear submarines are built on tother side
of the bay ...and round the corner we have got sellafielld(windscale/seascale)
it was once called n thats a nuclear dumpsite for the chinese......
so much to the sun and moon....
n get some crackers of sunsets over "the bay"....

Report Regbutler September 11, 2026 8:20 AM BST
So, as I said, and Google confirms, the Bristol Channel has the second highest tidal range in the world at roughly 12 metres, only some place in Canada beats it. It's to do with the Atlantic funnelling into a narrow channel of water, apparently.
It also creates the famous Severn Bore, further "upstream" near Gloucester, although I could be in danger of getting called that if I carry on anymore about tides.
