Yes, but I made a post this morning, but seems to have now gone, hence I thought the thread had gone - ffs, I just commented on the nature of business that being a bookie entails in terms of competition and success etc.

Can't seem to post on that thread without it being removed if you comment about bookies (in general not specific company I posted)

i walked past my local betfred at 9 this morning saw 2 people go inside ,so i phoned the police thought they must be breaking in

I'm going to go against the majority here, and say that my local baldy shop, the only one in town now, about 10 miles to the nearest other shop...
Has a fair few punters in from 8.30 until about midday, don't know about after that...
Admittedly, some are just in for a free coffee and doing small lucky15 bets, and a chat about last night's football, so more like a social club...
But still money going over the counter on the cartoon racing
And some big punters on the fruit machines

One punter was an ex-bookie manager for Billy's.
He'd come in every sat morning with 30 or 40 5p e/way patents.
I reckon he just wanted to inflict pain on betting shop settlers as a catahrtic exercise.
He left bookmaking to become an English teacher.

I go in for an hour most mornings, sometimes 8.30, to get a read of the Post before the others, but generally about 9.30 or so...to some of the old boys, they are in for the whole morning, having a few coffees and a chat, it's their life

punting/gamblings a strange physicy, when i went racing regularly 20 yrs back, £200 a day was a decent betting wedge for me on course on either  2,3 decent bet or £25 a race, people i went with or worked with who,d have £2 to £5 a race ,wouldnt think twice today of having £50 in lottery tkt,s or £50 in BONUs ball all ins all outs to win watche,phones etc and yet i wouldnt spend a KNICKER on either  the lottery,scratchcard,bonus ball draws etc,etc,strange game gambling

There was another lunatic in the area, another shop, who would go in with a fistful of slips.
He'd be perming say any 2 from 4 with say any 3 from 5 for example (accas) all for around 2p.
He would ask for the prices on some of them.
How the staff there never had a whipround to have his knuckles smashed in is a minor miracle

By contrast, there's someone who puts on about 300 quid a day, usually 2 x £5 ew lucky 15's ...always does the shortest priced horses of the day, hasn't got a clue how to work out his returns, and always claims he's been diddled

You get to know many of them Reg especially when you're a 'relief' manager covering days off in different areas.
You learn to look after yourself when you're on the road.
Some of them would sell their granny to strap a bet.

The up and down bets were popular with miners for example.
Single and double stakes about in the era of betting tax meant you paid tax on some of the winnings.
we live in an age where everyone wants a quick hit and don't want to wait around waiting for multiple bets to realise winnings.

Yeh, it's really weird CB - not had posts removed before, but discussing anything to do with bookies businesses (even in general) on that post seems to have lead to each of my posts getting removed. Very big brother, as it's now an entire wide topic that is redacted in that case!

Leif,Betfred does single or double stakes about on their website i often do the single stakes along with a straight double.

Ladbrokes and Coral owner Entain is the latest gambling operator to announce job losses as it revealed it is set to cut up to 400 customer care jobs globally.

The news came as the company revealed that its chief executive Stella David had written to prime minister Andy Burnham to warn that more job losses would follow should increases to machine games duty (MGD) be announced in the budget, along with impacts for both horseracing and greyhound racing.

Entain said it was simplifying its customer care model as part of its ongoing efforts to address the impact of the UK’s increased gambling taxes, as well as becoming a "sharper, fitter and more agile business".

The company said it had begun a consultation process which could result in the removal of around 400 of its 2,000 customer care roles, although it was not specified how many would be in Britain.

David said: "The proposed changes are being made to ensure our business remains competitive, financially resilient, and well positioned for the future as our sector faces an increasingly challenging operating environment.

"This decision has not been made lightly, and our immediate priority is to support those of our colleagues who may be impacted through this transition."

Last week gambling industry giant bet365 announced job losses, with the news that 340 roles were set to be cut across the business. The company blamed pressures from increased taxation and regulation, along with the competitive trading environment, for the decision.

That followed the news that Paddy Power were to close 100 betting shops in the UK and Ireland before the end of the year with 400 jobs at risk.

In July, Betfred said they were set to close 132 shops, citing increases in taxation and economic uncertainty as the primary drivers behind the decision. Those closures were expected to impact about 600 jobs.

' I hope the government will consider the real-world consequences'

In her letter to Burnham, David warned that doubling the rate of MGD to 40 per cent as some campaigners have proposed would add about £100 million to the annual cost of running Entain's betting shop business.

She cited independent modelling commissioned by the Betting and Gaming Council from EY, which estimated that a 40 per cent MGD rate could lead to up to 1,470 betting shop closures and 15,900 job losses, "and ultimately result in a net loss to the Exchequer of around £120 million".

David also told the prime minister that Entain's shops contribute about £50m each year to British horseracing, as well as supporting greyhound racing.

She wrote: "Fewer viable shops would therefore have consequences not only for our own colleagues and high streets, but for jobs and livelihoods across both racing industries.

"The impact would go well beyond media rights and the levy. Fewer shops and a weaker retail sector would also mean less sponsorship and commercial support flowing into horseracing, greyhound racing and the wider network of sports and communities that benefit from that investment.

"I hope that, before any decision is taken on MGD, the government will look beyond the headline tax rate and consider the real-world consequences for the people whose livelihoods depend on these businesses and the communities in which they operate."
Betting and Gaming Council chief executive Grainne Hurst said the government should heed the warnings coming from the gambling industry.

She said: "Entain is the latest major employer in our sector to announce job losses as higher taxes continue to bite.

“The proposed loss of around 400 customer care roles is yet more evidence of the real-world consequences of piling costs onto the regulated industry, with hundreds of people and their families now facing uncertainty over their livelihoods.

“Businesses are already cutting jobs, closing betting shops and reducing investment. Ministers should be in no doubt: further tax rises will put more jobs at risk, force more closures and weaken the regulated sector, while handing an advantage to the unsafe, unregulated illegal gambling market. The government should heed these warnings before more damage is done."

Only the head honchos at the betting entities did not see this coming. An over-reliance on fobt - the scourge of gambling - and a distinct lack of interest in bookies accepting bets on horseracing and other sports are the reasons why the bookies are heading down a dead-end with their eyes firmly shut.

The inability to agree and reach an agreement between the premier racecourses and the Racecourse Association;e the arrogance and reluctance to appoint an experienced and seasoned horseracing administrator as head of the BHA is another why the horseracing sector is fragmented and incohesive ie pulling in different direction for self-interests only.

As such an implosion is necessary for the greater good. But, please do not blame the present government for the predicament the bookies have self-created.

Hence why only a government controlled Tot system will eventually control it all, IMO.
