I was shocked how quickly the shop experience has changed.  I walked past a couple of shops during Cheltenham.  In the 1990s and 2000s they would have been rammed, and fun.  A tiny handful of pensioners watching the racing and an equal number of younger men playing the machines.

Surely the reason why betting shops are in decline is the competition? Why would you go to a betting shop unless you live within walking distance and want to chat with your mates? I live 6 miles from a betting shop as I did 50 years ago. At that time I did have telephone accounts but if I wanted to watch a race I went to a betting shop which had a few car parking spaces outside it. Otherwise I went to a racecourse. Then along came attheraces, terrestrial coverage of big meetings through channel 4 and ITV. Then SKY and RTV plus numerous online betting opportunities which also include live pictures of every race. Since 2000, exchanges have allowed any serious racing fan or punter to get better odds than a betting shop can provide on 90+% of horses. 99% of my horse racing bets are now on Betfair and I only keep one other online account in case Betfair goes down. I don't need a betting shop any more. My grandfather (who farmed with horses) needed a farrier to shoe them. I don't and now only leisure horses provide any work for farriers. If I want any hardware I order it on Amazon and get it next day. I no longer visit hardware stores. No different with betting shops. And you get roughly 10% higher winning returns at Betfair SP than industry SP.
Report FOYLESWAR September 4, 2026 8:21 AM BST
we effectivly have a betting shop on our lap, no need to use a shop .
Report sageform September 4, 2026 8:30 AM BST
Exactly Foyles. Why does anyone still prefer a shop? The only thing that I still prefer to buy in a shop is fresh food.
Report slickster September 4, 2026 8:38 AM BST
Sageform you of course make valid points re betting shops today. I still use them regularly and will continue to do so. The main reason is I'm still getting on. Very easy to spread your business around 3 or 4 shops. If I had ANY online accounts they would be shut down immediately. They won't let you on unless you're a mug. I've only been stopped twice in the red shops. I'm staying a couple of steps ahead and basically they don't know it.
Report FOYLESWAR September 4, 2026 8:44 AM BST
each to their  own but as sageform says the value is on here especially if you back the bigger priced uns sometimes near double the odds of sp .and you dont  get restricted on here . i do have a few accounts but rarely use them. my local laddies and billz if they have 3 people in its a crowd.
Report slickster September 4, 2026 8:49 AM BST
The green bots have practically ruined betfair. I rarely use it now. Years ago I wanted a ton at 9. 8.2 was available. Within a millisecond 8.8 was being asked for. So I asked for 8.6. Again the bot asked for 8.4. I'm not chasing around anymore trying to outwit a bot.

Just a heads up for anyone who occasionally puts a few quid on an outsider on Paddy:

I learnt to my cost at the weekend that they now only give BOG on bets of at least a fiver. I had a couple of quid on a 33/1 winner but was surprised to see they paid me out on the 25/1 I'd got about 10 mins before the off.

Having done a bit of digging, I found out that they changed their BOG policy at the start of August. The swines!

the second covid lock down, where you could only bet online, all sports back but shops shut. the shops lost 50% of their business to online. It never returned.
Report sageform September 4, 2026 4:27 PM BST
I'm sure I can't compete with you slickster but Betfair exchange largely suits me. I bet to small stakes and back and lay in most races. My big complaint in the last 3 months is the constant "timed out" messages if you have not had a bet for a couple of minutes. So annoying when it takes 4 or 5 keystrokes and pages to get back to where you were. I have missed a few winning bets because of it.

Early bf you could get on decently the night before. Then properly the next morning.
Loads of crap firms letting arbs go Luvbet? rings a bell, terrible e/w races getting abused, coupon football prices held and done.
All change when they pull the strings on here. What I've read about in running, bots, in house etc is correct I am sure.
Value kaput bf, fruit machines limited, competing against slots on your phone, shops close obviously. Where they going to screw next? Can't get enough out the young generation compared to what they have demolished.
Steady away constantly or absolutely smash it quick. Easy call.
