Next budget will be very interesting, they're going to have to raise taxes somewhere thats for sure. The usual suspects ie tobacco, gambling, car tax, holiday flights etc will no doubt be looked at but they need much more than that will bring. Burnham hasnt got a clue and I suspect his popularity will plummet the day after it.

Am waiting to see Burnham get a serious interview from the media, had it far too easy so far and I suspect he will be clueless the first time he comes up against someone who asks the right questions and doesnt let him get away with not answering them.

GC is spot on. And several other things as well, some more dubious than others.

Given the pitiful alternatives, Labour won't be going anywhere soon. Extremists no doubt seething at that prospect. I didn't approve of the parachuting in of Burnham, but he has done nothing so far to put a dampener on his honeymoon period.

To be fair, Blakey is superseding his predecessor in the u turns space, he's managing to do them via tik tok alone, before he has even touched the despatch box. His team must be positively gagging at the amount of people that apparently believe what he puts out.

The country is in a mess and I understand why people are blaming politicians but in having a go at the present lot, don't conveniently forget which party got us into the mess. My gripe against Labour is not they have made the situation worse but that they haven't shown enough vision to get us out of the mess.

Bring back Liz Truss!

Sorry; thought this was the joke page. But come to think of it, a lot of supposedly intelligent people, as well as the muppets, did appoint her. A lot of the comments on this thread suggest that democracy just does not work. There is a country over the ocean that proves this without question.

PS I am up for the job.
Report dpm August 30, 2026 12:01 PM BST
Actually Liz Truss given the chance would have gone on to be a great Tory Prime Minister, but the blob and the bank of England put paid to that. Funny how Liebor have shut up about the guilt prices now they are higher now than when she was PM.

Jeez, over and over the pointy fingers are directed squarely at politicians and parties w/o bringing in the main culprits. It saddens me deeply how many here of decent age and experience can't or won't look above the canopy at the emergent layer - that is, the central banks, the centuries old dynasties, plus the corporations, NGO's and media etc that hold way more power than gov ever will now - most countries captured and in a blatant lockstep to eventually seize all.

Everything else beneath is pure puppetry - paid to look other way while burying a few morals. This has never been more relevant as it is now.

Society doesn't change this dramatically without specifically aggressive engineering.

On the subject at hand it would not surprise me to see racing heavily reduced over the next few years. - The levy is already shrinking in real terms (when pitched against CPI - a fiddled number in itself and much higher in truth), premier meetings slashed, horse population in decline, foal crop sinking too.

AI says this - 'One industry analysis estimates 40% of racecourses, studs and training yards could close within five years'

The BHA has projected 6–7% fewer races by 2027 compared to 2024.

We havn't even got the ball rolling properly on financial checks either driving gamblers to black markets.

This only ends one way chaps - they don't want you placing bets on animals but I'll bet ya dollars to donuts they'll open their satchels if you want to buy in on their stocks and pump their bags as the power of fiat continues to rapidly debase due to criminal money expansion.

We are being handed a different world and tout suite

Oh but racing will survive in a smaller more selective form for more, shall we say, selected people.

Cue the myopic comments and the 'ooh I can't have that' brigade Cool

I must say I at least had Burnham down as being savvy, to that end I was very surprised how oblivious he appeared to be on the issue of letting those two out who dragged the officer along in the getaway car, I thought he'd suss the backlash that would come on that one, but no, completely missed it.
