Fahey often would target it with a nice one, but he not getting many wins lately. Oisin Orr is flying and will surely be moving to a bigger yard full time soon.

tbh I don't feel that there is a large differential, but it came up because the guests on rtv this morning confidently claimed that York was bigger. When I had to book time off work to view the festivals, I went for the two obvious ones plus GG.

LoL….I’ve stated before I’ve been to York races over 30 times and thoroughly enjoy the city,just not the York ale…..dreadful….real ale at room temperature…..nope.

Have been there more times than I wish to recall Ronnie. I used to have a joint with my brother at Winsford and St Helens greyhounds in the 80's. Enjoyed every minute but it was hard work and you could write a book on the characters that came and went.

Mr S i swear this i true  we went to pick the pitch owner up but he was not in he was out window cleaning we were lat setting off we got stuck in traffick and was not going to get there in time for a pick the pitch holder managed to flag a moter bike down and get him there with minutes to spare.

All a matter of opinion but York in a different league imo,a while since I've been to Goodwood but the facilities at York in a different league,re the racing every race has at least 100k ,every hcp a class 2.Goodwood filled out with class 3's and even a class 4,always enjoy your posts Cider but surely this is a wind up?

I couldn’t think of many years the Sussex stakes could compare with the judmonte it seems almost every year the judmonte is the strongest race of the season occasionally pipped by the Irish champion stakes I would think 2011 was the only time this century the Sussex was the better race .

As for the beer in Yorkshire well that’s on a different planet ,not talking about the racecourse stuff.

Wednesdays final decs indicates which of the two is the better fixture anyone who seriously thinks goodwood is better is been a little bit silly really ,I know most wouldn’t agree but I would have the western meeting as the third best flat meeting ahead of goodwood,however I do accept last months goodwood fixture was considerably better than is the case most years.

The perception of a meeting is in the eye of the beholder essentially. A bigger meeting tends to be more than the sum of its parts. The Irish would point to Galway I guess. Loads of good horses run in Meydan, but only the connections and Angus care. It's not attendance, not the number of group races, not how nice the course is to be at (most people aren't there, couldn't care less!). Ironically the weather plays a big part in the perception, given the contrast of the Epsom washout vs glorious goodwood. Even though the people broadcasting it to us are ordinarily moaning about the weather, whether it's wet or cold, warm or dry lol.

I'm definitely open to the possibility that the perception of GG and the ebor meeting is different to mine. Goodwood has always been the second meeting I checked the dates for.

I've been to York but not the Ebor Meeting and Goodwood many times and would rate York as the best track certainly. On the question of ales I can say that Roses Malton Bitter is one of the best beers I have sampled second only to the Draught Newcastle Brown. Don't know if Roses is still about I'm talking mid sixties.

Those are for people who don't like beer jimnast, even Americans laugh at Miller drinkers. My first on track bet at York was at Batleys Cash and Carry day in 1992, What Katy Did a debutant 2 yo ridden by Steve Cauthen, for John Gosden and Sheikh Mo ew 9/1 won 7/1, left losing, a day to remember though.

European lager types are handy for cleaning the kitchen sink……I do like a cold miller tho….

york quality wise is by far the better meeting, but like someone else said after r ascot , goodwood is the 2nd meeting i look up the dates, imo   goodwood definetly used to be ranked  superior to york  esp  in the70s- 90s   5 days covered superbly then on the bbc , while york only had 3 days

take this fact; nobody aside from you thinks the same. nobody. my mate has 7 pubs and he sells none of that, or anything like it. its pure cold fizz and utter carp

and hardys chardonnay. 4 quid of the cost is tax and shipping, thanks to this spiteful govt. so the wine you get is worth about 3. you have what could be described as an unsophisticated palate, and thats being charitable

When they were rebuilding Ascot racecourse in 2005  ...  They did not move ROYAL ASCOT to Goodwood, did they -

It did indeed onlooker and a very enjoyable week although the communal singing afterwards made me realise where we were as ilkley moor bar tat is a bit different than land of hope and glory ,Newmarket applied to hold it which of course was ridiculous as at the time there would have been no more than 8 hotels in the local area,one of my favourite horses red clubs won the Coventry that year,on another note those who enjoy 2 mile races have royal ascot at York to thank as York changed the track to accommodate the royal ascot long distance races,the other course who applied for it was Newbury which did get a consolation when given the king George.

Just looked back at the opening day at York onlooker no idea why but the meeting started with the king stand stakes the Queen Anne was race 3

RA at goodwood and then glorious goodwood next month would have been illogical.

York is certainly a more important track across the season. Goodwood is like Epsom in that sense, once a year it is important.

At least Royal Ascot North wasn't a gimmick.

Yes fair point about goodwood cider ,I’ll tell you what was ruined as a day out oaks day that year the decided to do a royal Ascot type ladies day as there wasn’t going to be one at Ascot ever since that day the crowd oaks day are just pests ,it was a good day prior to that

I have the Duke of Edinburgh but looking at the times mines wrong it says only a 10 minute gap between races 4 and 5 and 25 minutes between 5 and 6

Yes I'm thinking the QA being over the straight mile is synonymous with opening the meeting. So maybe felt too jarring as they wanted it to seem as close to normal as possible.

It's a blur now, bits of it must have been pretty odd, the hunt cup not a straight mile for example.

Looks like the Coventry was the 1ST race for a while.
2003 - 2007.

It was all round very different cider as a one of it was fine and nowhere else could have done it better ,up till then we had never seen horses pass the winning post with another circuit to go ,can’t really remember the hunt cup just checked up 22 ran ,the st James palace was won by shamadal sadly he never raced again.don’t know what the city was like as I went by train each day,but I would imagine it would have been very busy.

Good detective work there Penzance I should have remembered that as three valleys won the first race which I remember now.

I found the straight course easier to bet on than the round course uptheirons but yes very hard.

jimnast, hope you are well. Regarding the different running order, I wonder if it may have had anything to do with ease of stalls positioning? At RA they start at 1m straight, then 6f, then 5f. They just shove the stalls down the straight. With no straight mile at York perhaps it was easier to do as they did? No idea really, just a thought.
I am in the Parade Ring tomorrow. Just doing a day trip. Punting is unlikely to be assisted by a decent drop of overnight rain on watered ground. Hard enough to sort out where the best stall position is there at the best of times. I may stick to the food'n'fizz and go easy. I was sorry to miss your message a few weeks back. Not being rude I just didn't glance up at that part of the screen. I shall drop you a liner now. All the best.

Good morning to you both yes nice to meet up yesterday Donegal hope the hangover doesn’t last to long and also look forward to Sahara glass perhaps at Ascot or Cheltenham over the winter,well done Ronnie on getting the front to beat in the big race ,I guess you called in the hop last night,Andrew from Sweden and workrider both flew in to see the big head to head so it was a bit disappointing it didn’t really materialise,hope you both enjoyed the day in Andrew’s case it was his first visit I’m sure he would enjoyed seeing the Henry Cecil gates and the statue of you know who and all the memorabilia that’s in that part of the course.

What was the feeling on the ground about the big race?

I didn't have a bet. That shouldn't need to be noted, but it does on here. The 'lads' and their dirty tactics ruined another race in my opinion. Whether it impacted the winning outcome, or not. AOB may claim that the intended sacrificial lamb, née pacemaker missed the kick, and it ruined their plans. Maybe, maybe not, but he still managed to have a homing device on Ombudsman and spent half the race trying to squeeze him up. We've seen their intended pacemakers miss the kick countless times before, and they invariably have their ears ridden off them to circle the field to get to the front anyway.

AOB likes to claim it's all innocent and they just want a good pace to find the best horse. Sorry Aidan, it just doesn't wash. If that's the case, your no hoper would have just gotten out of the way of the rest of the field if he was unable to do the job set, rather than deliberately interfere with your primary opponent.

punters just want fair racing ,but to different degrees /methods ,AOB,johnny G ande yesterday booby walsh proved they didnt,whats this garbage from walsh dont come down the middle and give everyone a fair crack at it,stay on inside and cause as much carnage in behind as you can, RACING,s struggling enough but if racing isnt about trying to find out the best horse in the race but finding a  way for inferior horses to win by any means,whats the poit in it ? , like cider ,going forward how many more  people in how many more  races ,will just sit on their hands and watch

Staying on the rail to make it harder for opponents that are held up is a totally legitimate tactic. But also running a worker bee only there to try and lock in an opponent who you know is drawn on the rail and will be held up, isn't.

Good morning cider I’ve just read timeforms review of the race and they indicate without stating it that ombudsman wasn’t helped by the ballydoyle runners

It was quite pleasing to see the worlds two superpowers in the breeding game beaten by the best breeding operation

Part of the psychological warfare isn't it as well, as opponents pretty much know the mafia will control how the race is run, and where the field will be taken. Of course their primary runner has a double advantage, knowing runners are there simply to disadvantage opponents, and you know how. It puts opponents on the backfoot and paranoid before the stalls have opened. I'm pretty sure this was overarching Buick's mindset and he pretty much panicked. Who knows, I doubt he was at his best anyway but the whole affair is very unsavoury.

Morning jim, I was torn on the outcome, I'd have liked to have seen Ed Walker take it, but if I'd have had a bet in the race, it would have been Almaqam! I do like the connections of the winner also, but I didn't anticipate him being able to get close the winning tbh.

moore/AOB have spent the last week 24/7 telling us this is one of the best horses theyve ever trained/sat on
so why would you go out of your way  to  race on the slowest art of the track,just because it give you a better chance to imepede /make it diffcult for THE FAV, and has it hapended leave the door open for others torace on the bestpart of the track and beat you, surely if you think your on best horse in race you gie it the best chance of winning, THEIR OUT THINKIG THEMSELVESN HALF THE TIME , IMO

They're selling stallions, it's a business. No more complicated than that.

But in the race itself, staying on the rail is entirely legitimate. And obviously a benefit of being on the pace. Standard, legitimate race riding tactics should be distinguished from running spoilers (not legitimate).

Bolger's will be my first bet of the meeting. She still looked a bit green to me in the Irish Oaks so it's pretty interesting that he ran her in a mile race after that. Possibly part of the development, hopefully she will be a bit sharper now. Outsider of the field aside from another pacemaker, but I'd be pretty hopeful she'll be able to outrun the odds.

Afternoon Ronnie. Just got up...to my shame. I have been going to Parade Ring restaurant since they opened it in....2015-ish. Like everything at York it is classy and good value. The atmosphere is very gentle ...more like a good class restaurant than a racecourse. I have done a few such places, including the one in the Ebor stand , and find most of them too noisy and the food very average (smoked salmon + rubber chicken). This is very good indeed and the food is excellent. As usual, great value. Moet and Chandon £120 at Newmarket. £80 here. The more you buy the more you save!!! Tables are restricted to 6 people so no big noisy groups on stag do's. Some tables for 2 . Not to be done every meeting but I will be there again next Juddmonte and every year until I drop.All the best. Hope you stay dry and bag a few winners.
