Why was Kate O'Connor competing in the Commonwealth Games? The Republic of Ireland left the Commonwealth many years ago yet here she is representing Ireland in the Europeans. Very odd. The BBC are so schitzophrenic about Ireland. One day they are a foreign country and part of the EU, the next they are part of UK.

It was one of the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. Residents can identify as British, Irish or both and can have dual nationality.

I think Rory McIlroy has represented both the UK and Ireland separately.

Politically Irish, fiscally British.

in theory shouldnt change the finishing time but would be intresting to see how different athletes reacted to racing in lanes next to male athletes,some might be insired to run faster whilst others might wilt

Presumably as if people consider themselves Irish they wouldn't want to participate in the commonwealth games. ie it's cynical, in the same way lots of English people opted to play for Ireland in football if their grandad flew over the country in 1956. As they weren't good enough to play for England.

What just like Arg and Brazil not turning up for the Euros or River Plate for the Ch league or indeed any other better team/individual not qualified to enter a competition you mean? Christ knows wtf the rest of your post is trying to achieve as I think you'll find prof athletes can only run a fast as they can and the sex of the person next to them matters not a jot.

penzance - you are correct, you can only beat who you are up against and fair play to Amy as she didn't put a foot wrong.
But she is going to need a big step up on her best times to challenge at the World Champs and Olympics.
It's not impossible that she can do so and let's hope she can, but it's a big ask on the book.

What irks me is all of this "the first athlete to win 4 European golds at the same games".
Well it would have been a bit difficult for anyone else to have done the same clean sweep before ,given the 100m mixed relay only made it's debut this year

I'd agree the level of competition is not high enough for that, but she can likely win the award just due to repeated success and the national bbc fervour around her.

Given the paucity of opposition i'm not surprised Amy is the jolly for that market Stu.

The BBC have predictably gone in to hype overdrive about her achievements, certainly more so than if it had been a male athlete imo.
Not knocking what she has achieved, good luck to her, but a bit of balance wouldn't go amiss.
