The spectacle today is a common occurence compared to uk racing 20 yrs ago , palmer stopping his hot pot with the pikey orr gping up and down on spot like hugo drugged it , evans yoke reved upto pull like giraffe at prohibitive odds , bells yoke stopped like a drunk , where does it end , these horses at prohibitive odds are not running to form either drugged up to stop orgot at in other ways , my advice to any young people entering game stay away from it and stick to your football betting , the present bha is as corrupt as they come in cahoots with trsiners amd bookies to stop horses to keep industry sweet , id say this these scumbags can only rob pun ter so much , i dont envisage uk racing and irish racing to last in its present guise , u can only rob people so much

How many of those who defend the sport, seemingly at all costs, actually even bet before the race? That tells you pretty much everything you need know. That must have changed drastically over time. It's just an admittance that the vast majority can't win doing what they used to do. How does that make the sport an attractive proposition? The odds have become increasingly stacked against the punter - the increased number of races, the increased mediocrity, and of course the ineptness of those participants whether it sinister or otherwise. If you are that bad it becomes impossible to tell. Add in virtually nothing is policed. That against a background of cheerleading media who care nothing beyond their own jobs.

Whether you back favourites or not, trhe order of value will be Betfair (either a few minutes before the off or BSP), then on course betting and last by a long way, Industry SP. If you are betting with any hope of profit, avoid industry SP. Taking part in the tipping comp just emphasises that for me in that I usually choose fairly short odds but still get on on the exchange at about 0.4 points longer. Over 20 winners that is 8 points more profit. With horses priced around 8-10/1 ISP, Betfair will usually be offering 12-14.

True howard, there is now a big difference between the traditional 'punter' (bashing the bookies) and the modern one using exchanges for their punting.
However, the term 'punter' is very loose in meaning, when you can't see who is matching your money. |

On the issue of punters being losers financially - hasn't it always been that way? I'd guess historically (60s 70s 80s 90s etc) most likely 99.5% or more of punters never made any money and in fact lost their money.
It's just different ways of doing that these days! |

The other big negative of ISP is that you have to bet before the off. No in running. When in running started I was chatting to Jim Old about it and he previously rode for Fred Rimell. Apparently Fred always said that if he could bet in running he would be a multi millionaire. He might have been exaggerating but he reckoned that a horses body language told him a lot even after half a mile. I know we have to put up with delays on TV but I always bet win or place (never both) before the off and place a lay with keep option just after the off at a lower price. I choose horses that usually race prominently and get my stake back surprisingly often in the first 2 furlongs of flat races.

but you get it matched when you dont want to, ie the choc ice is wrong. keep bets are giving it away. you simply have no idea what the true price is likely to be
if i/r hadnt been messed up so much at the outset and given some the chance to get in front with their greater understanding of pic delays (not me) things might have been different almo0st everyone i knew who heard of the opportunity to bet i/r was adamant they could do it. but they didnt. who nose how many never found out because they were so far behind? could be thriving now |

Yes you give away half of winning bets quite often but you also get back your stake on a lot of losers. Since I adopted this policy I am only losing 0.5% which means that without the Betfair commission I am making a small profit. I do this for fun though, not to make a living. I use the stock market for that.

Barbury Boy. Well backed today so took 6.6 a couple of minutes prior to the off. Laid off at 4. The horse looked home and dry and went odds on but got beaten. Cost me nothing.
