Enjoyable watch last night. Jacob still got it after 10 months off course. He looked well beaten with 4 laps to go but just strolled past them. Great win by Amy Hunt and yes, all being well, she is likely to be in the 200m and 4x100 relay. Entirely possible that she could win 3 Golds.We get disappointed when we only win one gold in the Olympic Athletics but we have been dominant in Europe for a long time apart from throwing events. Shame Josh Kerr is not running in the 1500.

I watch it because I like athletics, but the European Championship is a far cry from the World Championships and the Olympics. It's hardly surprising that we might do a bit better. Post the East Germans the 100 metres has rarely thrown up someone who can challenge on the world stage, and this will be no different. Asher-Smith won in 10.85 Hunt won all out in 11.00. That doesn't cut the mustard. Her style of running actually reminds me of the East Germans with that quick turnover rather than a long stride.

A lot of these events are closer to Listed than Group 2.

Not sure how much they take, but the layers got a lovely result with Jacobs pulling up in the 100 last night. He was around 1/6. Battocletti was even shorter for the women's 5000, but most would have been guessing what sort of form she was in. Jacobs aside, the Italians seem to be going pretty well.

The women's 800m is a G1

Men's Discus another G1.  After that I'm struggling.

800m.  Perennial consistent group 1 performer who beat the indoor WR earlier this season, who had a minor mid season injury, up against very progressive youngster with excellent speed figures.  Add into the mix a third runner, up in distance and moved from jumps to flat who looks good on the bridle up against lower class opposition, but up in class here and beat by the more established pair at the trip already this season.  All looked good LTO and claim to be in great shape.  Prospects of a very fast time if a strong pace is set.  A slow pace might favour the filly up in trip.

VERDICT  I think the most likely outcome is Hodgkinson goes out fast and sets the race up for Werro. Bol likely not to have the pace to challenge in a fast race but if Hodgkinson buckles, she might run on past a beaten horse.  But I don't see any value in the price and Hodgkinson's trainer very bullish about her recent training.  Also worth noting that Werro was very poor in the end of season championship finale last season.  Fascinating race

I would be surprised if Werro doesn't win. Hodgkinson has disappointed herself enough times in the past to be of any interest, and I agree Bol doesn't appear to have an extra gear.

Until this Championship I don't think I had heard Hunt talk before. She's pretty cocky sounding, and yes, she might sweep the medals at this level, but she isn't quite Michael Johnson. She's even well off the level that Asher-Smith was at her peak.

Promise from Newnham, particularly if she can go a little quicker, and still finish her race off.

Are there any odds comparison sites for athletics, or is pretty much a case of going into individual sites? It's almost as if they don't want you to bet which probably tells you something.

800 a different race now, even if Werro is re-instated. Sure to be big drifter. I didn't think she looked that good even before she fell. You would have thought she would have pulled out a couple of yards on the athlete to her outside who was leaning on her.

Seems like she's been reinstated, although looking at the slo mo, seems fairly certain she tripped up herself.  No one has been dq'd.

Quite extraordinary that they have decided on 10 in the final. Werro tripped herself up! The equivalent in racing would be that all fallers in races that qualify for a final would be advanced. Ridiculous and flouting the rules.

Just like FIFA they are pandering to TV who would prefer to see three contenders tomorrow rather than two. I still expect Werro to have some bruises in the morning. Come on Keely.

GB won't appeal, but the French might

Why would the French appeal? Their runner was the reason space was at a premium - that looked a deliberate tactic, and she qualified. It was the wrong decision to re-instate, but I can't see why that would change the decision, once they have made the wrong decision.

I would imagine that Hodgkinson has now gone favourite, and it wouldn't surprise me if Werro bombed out completely.

Surprisingly, just after the announcement, the market had all three at around 2.5. Someone knew about the reinstatement 10 minutes before the BBC announced it as Werro went from 4.5 to 2.5 in one hit at that point. She is now 2.3 fav. Were the "stewards" all on betfair? Werro landed with her thigh on the inside raised bar. That will hurt. I would go 2.8 Keely and Bol, 4 Werro. Werro is evens to make the start imo. I was a fairly serious athlete and injuries always feel far worse the next day.

It looked a fairly heavy fall and adrenalin kicks in immediately after a fall.  Unable to think of a similar incident I asked AI the following ...

    The Outcome: Because it was a straight 10,000m final (no semi-finals required), he simply got back up during the live race and went on to win gold.

Thanks Clyde. Mo does not count as bruises don't hurt at max for several hours and tartan track surfaces are fairly soft to fall on. I once twisted an ankle in a X country race when I stepped on a stone. I carried on and won the race with almost no discomfort. Within an hour of finishing I could barely walk and next day I could not put my foot to the ground. Not saying Werro is anything like that but she bruised her thigh and some ribs for sure.

Maybe you haven't seen it, but there is a suggestion the French athlete's hand caught Werro just before she came down. There was some contact. I suppose it's hard to know how significant that impact was, but it does perhaps explain why the French didn't bother to challenge. It does provide a get out for the decision.

Not too many disappointments for GB so far, but that wasn't great from Thorner. Not sure if she was quite favourite, but athletes need to seize opportunities, not throw them away. Seemingly, no excuses.

She had the lane draw advantage, and I am not so sure you could say she did much more than get the job done. After all she was 1/7. She lost her form going through the line of 100 and even more so in that race. At the moment she is quite a bit short of being the real deal on the world stage.
