He created one of the simplest, yet funniest, visual jokes ever ...

Wearing his Wellingtons on the 'wrong leg'

The right leg had an  'L' written on the lining of the overturned top - and likewise - the left leg had a letter 'R' on it.

So simple yet so funny - and very clever, too - because the 'mistake' was on full view/display, throughout his act.

‘And there’s more!’ .......

Cricket was known for his charity work, appearing alongside Peter Kay and Matt Lucas in the 2007 Comic Relief video for I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) and frequently put on tours to raise funds for the Francis House Children’s Hospice in Manchester.

In 2015, Cricket was awarded a papal knighthood, the Roman Catholic Church’s highest honour, by Pope Francis, in recognition of his charity work. Commenting on the award at the time, Cricket said: “The parish priest arrived and took out this certificate - it was a papal knighthood and it was in Latin. I thought, ‘He’s got the wrong fella here, is he sure it’s not the neighbour?’”

He added: “I do what I love. If I can raise money by entertaining people, sure it’s not hard work. To get an honour for doing something that you love is quite a blessing.”

seems he was a decent bloke all that charity work and he was funny , the woke mob wouldna be amused with his irish jokes but lifes too short   to worry about offending a few with some harmless humour.

Foyles thats only a small section of Irish society would complain about 'offensive jokes. Sure many of us love Bernard Manning, probably my favourite.

Anyhow Jimmy said he went to the barbers. The barber asked him if he wanted his hair cut round the back. Jimmy replied 'is there no room in the shop' Laugh

Public laughed at an egg boiling in those days tbh……used to laugh when Tommy cooper walked onto the stage ffs…

The Irishman who said it’s the way i tell em…..lol..made a fortune as well….

Manning was good….

Saw him several times over the years, last time about 15 years ago at a holiday camp in Devon...he was very good as usual, then after his act, spent about another hour going round all the tables, shaking people's hands, posing for photos ...really down to earth man.

Tommy Cooper still the best ever, imo, but some people just don't get him...my missus just can't see what I'm laughing at

Regularly revisit, Bernard Manning, Mike Reid and Jimmy Jones on youtube, when comedy was funny.Cool
Report DixieDean60 August 7, 2026 7:04 PM BST
Great comedians Duffy , totally un PC and told jokes about anyone and anything, as it should be.

Jimmy Jones is 88 now but is still doing gigs (he was last year anyway) , a masterful stand up.
