I agree with both sides - place backers should still be just as important, hence riding out needed, but in this case he only partly eased and didn't stop riding, so not one of the worst cases.

"partly eased" means didnt get the best position possible....maybe if the letter of the law was applied all horses would be ridden out to the line unless the horse was patently at the end of its tether.

as for my view, i agree, we would have no jockeys left to ride if the the rules were applied to the letter of the law....

No financial interest in the race. If the winner wasn't in the race does anyone think Bowen would've used the same lack of 'enthusiasm' after the last, whether you think the horse was dying or not? In general jockeys get away with the 'dont want to flog a dead horse' excuse which is fair if thats the reason they've eased off. But most cases its not its because its not gonna beat the one in front and the placing then becomes irrelevant to them, unless its a big prize when the excuse goes out the window and that same 'dead horse' is ridden more vigorously.

Sean Bowen, the rider of TROUVILLE (IRE), placed fourth, beaten by a short head for third place, had appeared to ride less vigorously before the winning post. After being interviewed and shown recordings of the incident, Bowen explained that the gelding was already tiring after jumping the final flight and felt unbalanced having changed legs after the course crossing, and whilst he maintained he never stopped riding, he had felt it prudent to hold TROUVILLE (IRE) together and was beaten into 4th by a stronger finisher. The Veterinary Officer examined the gelding post-race during routine testing and had nothing to report, other than TROUVILLE (IRE) had lost its left-hind shoe. His explanation was noted and the Stewards took no further action.

yeah, ive seen, im not buying it tbh in this case. just my opinion. i certainly dont have faith in anything coming from the steward. perhaps sean is right, he was on it, he definitely knows better than me and if thats the actual case fair enough. but it is also the same kind of excuse i would come up with if i was trying to get myself out of a ****up. hey ho, this is racing, i think it was a mistake. he is certainly not someone who does not give it all the vast majority of the time
