An interesting contrast between early Mac who was intelligent and inquisitive on behalf of the viewers, and the end-period Mac who did serious harm to racing on television by overdoing his right wing and misogynistic schtick.

Knew Barry Dennis when he had back row pitches at most southern tracks.
It was not until fellow Essex resident the late David Johnson (an owner of a finance company and owner of around !00 horses at one time including Grand National winner Comply or Die and top nat hunt owner 6 times) loaned Barry a significant sum of money to invest in front row pitches otherwise he would have remained a 'fiddler' as they used to call the ones betting on the back rows. And of course his Barry Bismark's where he appeared on tv giving his opinion of what favourite would not win also helped his cause. The clues to the chances of the Martin Pipe trained runners was easy to find on course as Barry would be a half a point over on the ones the yard did not fancy and on the ones they did fancy he often chalked up a little later than the pitches around him and be a fraction shorter. As for Big Mac Ramruma sums it as good as anyone could have done.. |
