So it’s that time of year when we can look at form and discuss the merits of those currently at the top of the market.

Let’s play the game fair but still enjoy the summer season left, whilst looking ahead….

I've rowed in with Maltese Cross. My last throw of the dice. I just cannot have Daryz for the shortie price and form of the last renewal victory. I still hope Diamond Necklace would come into the reckoning again, if she was truly under-cooked by her trainer.

Pink Panthera was 2nd behind Friendly Soul in The Vermielle. I'd imagine Behrayna would have won this had she not be injured in her last run.

I blame her trainer. He ought not to have run Behrayna on firm going. Otherwise, she'd probably have been a strong fancy now, if winning The Vermeille today.

Barzelona :

‘It felt good with Daryz’

As the defending champion of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Daryz was expected to make a strong impression in the Qatar Prix Foy (Gr. 2), which the champion did with great ease, much to the delight of his jockey: “It felt good; it was a very good preparatory race, even though it was easy for him. The conditions were different at Ascot, which explains his third-place finish. He’ll naturally be my favourite going into the Arc de Triomphe as he put in a near-flawless performance and his preparation for the big day couldn’t be better.â€

“Varandir still has room for improvementâ€

After falling short in the Cygames Grand Prix de Paris (Gr.1), Varandir secured a resounding comeback by dominating the Qatar Prix Niel, a preparatory race for three-year-olds ahead of the Arc de Triomphe: “He’s still very immature and has improved since his last outing. He’s gained strength and should continue to improve.â€

“Erdenali pulled off something specialâ€

Asked about the most impressive performance of the gala day, the 2021 Cravache d’Or winner – who has pulled well clear this year with a lead of more than twenty wins – replied without hesitation with the name of the winner of the Qatar Prix de Moulin de Longchamp (Gr. I): “I really liked his performance; you have to admit he did something special.â€
Report Delashay September 7, 2026 10:27 AM BST
A major challenge awaits Daryz on 4 October 2026: to defend his title in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and thereby achieve the extremely rare Foy–Arc double (only three horses have ever done so: Allez France in 1974, Sagace in 1984 and Waldgeist in 2019).

Francis-Henri Graffard, coach of Daryz (1st)

«It was important for Daryz to show this behavior, this calm, for his return to racing. Already in Deauville, during his public canter on the racetrack, it had gone very well. Today, everything went for the best. The horse was very professional, really serene. And the race went well with Bay City Roller who went in front, and who cleared the way at the top of the climb. Daryz really took his bit at that moment. He accelerated well in the home straight. He is now only 6 kilos below his normal weight: he will therefore be perfect for the day of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.â€

I’ll wait until the draw and ground conditions now, I thought that Pearled Majesty ran a good race in the Niel and I’ll see where they go.
Soumi was very easy on him and the trainer felt that it turned into a sprint, he was keen early on also so there’s more to come from him.

Alam and Pearled Majesty: strong runners-up

More than a length behind Varandir, Alam and Pearled Majesty took the runner-up spots. Mauricio Delcher-Sanchez, trainer of the latter, was not dissatisfied with his charge’s performance, but regretted the way the race unfolded: “Nobody kept up with Montreal... Pearled Majesty pulled a bit and the race boiled down to a sprint, which isn’t his forte. However, he produced a fine finish, proving himself competitive. We’ll see how he recovers and then we’ll take our time reviewing the rest of his programme (he is entered in the Arc and the Prix Dollar, ed.).†Alam, for his part, also put in a convincing performance on his return. Having been last for much of the race, he finished strongly, much to the satisfaction of his team, who still have their sights set on the Arc with him. “He’s made a very good return,†commented Mikel Delzangles. “We were beaten by a good horse and we know there isn’t a huge gap in class between the two. I’m very pleased with his finish and his behaviour. If he recovers well, he should be in the starting line-up for the Arc. He copes with all ground conditions, but I wouldn’t want it to be too heavy either.â€

Earlier in the year on this tread I’d said that with Pink Pantera beating the colts before the Diane that the form pointed the fillies to being better.
The Niel was slower than the Vermille and had another close finish, that early assertion I made seems right given the big run from Pink Pantera again yesterday.

I’d backed Behranya on the basis of that and had added Bay City, he’ll need much slower ground next time but I wasn’t disappointed with his run, the Tattersalls was franked by Saddad in Baden Baden yesterday and Bright Light ran very well.

The ground was given as good and he was held up in last, it looked to me a prep for the Arc and should it be very wet he’ll be an EW and @ 100/1 I’ll be happy with that as he’s proven against older horses whereas those from the Niel aren’t.

I recall that you’d snapped up the 20’s for Kaplana, Graffard has said that Sunly can go to the Arc or the Roylleau which I think seems harsh that she’s not a definite for the Arc.

Varandir won and earned his ticket and given her mighty run yesterday I’m surprised that she hasn’t automatically won her place in the race.

The colt that I mentioned above Bright Light finished ahead of Giavelloto yesterday, she’s 7 or 8/1 he’s as big as 150/1 and we know Botti’s horse was a very close 4th in last years race (a head behind Sosie) and had beaten Kaplana twice.

Interestingly, this was the slowest of the three “preps†for the main event on the first Sunday in October, with Bay City Roller over seven seconds slower than Friendly Soul to five out. Unable to shift up a gear on this quick ground and repeat his Epsom dynamics, he was drawn into Daryz's web and the winner was able to rattle off a closing three-furlong sectional of 32.57 with ease to brush him aside.

I’m wary of what Daryz will find when truly pushed like he was in the POW, that was a canter round yesterday, at the nice odds you have you have a good bet but I’m not going in at the current odds especially when they are thinking of running the 3 year old.
Do they wonder the same?

Have I missed any recent news about Minnie Hauk?

She's a big price for the Arc at 25/1+ and despite hating the thought of backing that 'impossible to predict' stable, I can't resist
having another blast of such a whopping price before the weekend, assuming all is good.

I'm happy to give her another chance and draw a line through a strange tactical race at York which didn't suit the class horses
of the race - even the excellent Kalpana only just scraped home from a much inferior filly!

I hate those races when the pacemakers are miles clear and it turns into a cat & mouse affair with the big guns waiting for each
other to make a move - they're often unsatisfactory affairs...like last year's Juddmonte where the rag of the field Birr Castle
was 25 lengths clear in the straight and he actually held on for third place, still beating a trio of multiple Group winners (even
at G1) who were a stone superior...meaning an obvious conclusion that the jockeys fcúkéd up!

I got 28 for Minnie Hauk after York and I was surprised she didn't head for the Vermeilles as an Arc prep - realistically, there's
only the Irish Champion left for her as a trial but I'm concerned she's available at 25/1 for that which says a lot to me - either
she's not going or there's a minor niggle...as surely even Coolmore wouldn't use her as yet another G1 pacemaker!

It would hardly be ideal prep being only a fortnight before the big day thouogh there's also the Prix Du Prince D'Orange remaining
as a subs' bench Arc trial after this coming weekend.

That race too is over 10f and Aidan's seemed to have campaigned her as a 10f performer this year, which I suspect may be for several
reasons...and may include avoiding the 3yo colts over 12f - I really do believe he's wrong as she's not got the instant acceleration
of a much more versatile Daryz over 10f and she's always struck me as a 12f filly...fully evidence by that fantastic second in last
year's Arc which is a stand-out career best, and she was only just beaten!

She has a couple of pounds to find on that form with the favourite and I think she's every bit as good as last year but she hasn't
been allowed a proper opportunity to show that she's more effective over 12f on soft ground besides that disappointment in the Yorkshire
Oaks, so I find that very easy to overlook.

I don't keep up with the daily rumour mill nowadays as I did do for decades so any snippets of informative links would be appreciatedHappy

I’d written the above yesterday and on further reflection the form of Diamond Necklace has been double franked in the Vermille.
She easily beat Friendly Soul at Goodwood, beat Pink Pantera over her best trip (10f or even a little less)

Her price of 20/1 makes more appeal than the same for Minnie Hauk.

At the beginning of the year people are willing to forgive a bad run in the 2000 Guineas and still take short odds for an AoB Derby horse.
Has everyone been guilty of writing off a previously unbeaten filly who’s done the rare Treble, Boussac, Poliches & Diane?

Dela - I'm not being dismissive of Diamond Necklace or Sunly but I'd well settle for Minnie Hauk
being the best of those three Arc candidates if I could be assured about here wellbeing as I've
been satisified so far this season that she's trained on - her preparation just hasn't been too
smart as they've been primarily interested in making her a 10f fast grund filly.

She's already reached the pinnacle of the 12f division with that superb run last year and I'd
expect that every variable will fall into place for her next month - if so, and she's fit & well
I'd be very optimistic she can deliver again.

It's unlikely but there are also two fillies races for her (L'Opera & Royallieu) on Arc weekend
in which she could steal an easier G1 so I couldn't confidently anticipate anything from that stableCrazy

Estrange has been retired,

Chris Richardson, managing director for Cheveley Park, said: "While Estrange has not had ideal conditions, with the very dry summer, it's been decided to retire her to the paddocks. Estrange suffered some bone bruising during her last race, which meant she has had to have an easy time since and, although an autumn campaign was being envisaged, time is running out to have her fully fit therefore Mrs Thompson feels, as she has won her Group 1, it is time for her to retire to the paddocks.

Baroud is on a rating of 53 also

Though Pearled Majesty beat him with ease the time before, he’s only on 51 still, he has the margin for making up as had been off the track the longest in the Niel 70 days.

Not sure if his rating has been adjusted?

But I’m interested in where he goes next? He has also been entered for the Champion Stakes and I’ve had a little EW @ 66/1

If he swerves the Arc he’ll go for the Dollar which was won by Amnatt on his way to victory there.

Varindir is as low as 12’s so the 66’s EW for a race where many will have had a long hard season makes appeal to me.

I do get your understandable negativity about Minnie Hauk as her form comparative to last year is hardly anywhere
near as inspiring but I've seen enough to suspect she'll reproduce her best before the year's out and it'd be such
a pity if she doesn't have the chance to go one better in the big one - I was going to add that we'll know a lot
more after this weekend but I've just noticed why Minnie Hauk was price at 25/1 yesterday for the Ir.Champion Stakes

As I previously mentioned...there's only the Prix Du Prince D'Orange left for her as a prep...now that the Arc Trial

I’m surprised to see Varindir entered there given the comments on Sunday, I’d wait to see what they do before piling anymore on that one.

Nemone Routh’s remarks about not being scared to run him against Daryz because of the effects of the draw potential seems out of line with other things that she’s said about their other runners.

When talking about the Forret after Erenfali’s Moulin win she said, we have Rayif and Samanagan for that but we wouldn’t want to run them against eachother.

I guess the draw in that race matters not a jot! Crazy

I’d tread with caution, because if Daryz is as good as they believe I don’t think that they’re like AOB and will put one of their own to sword when there’s other options.

The ground is going to play a massive part, there’s the horses who want soft and those who’ll take their chances if it’s firm.

I don’t think that Calandgan is the same horse and I’m looking to a less exposed type even older as an each way play. I don’t like having a bet in a race once I’ve had one and may regret it but I’ll do so for the interest.

I’d mentioned Fabre’s horse not being quoted and he’s ran another stinker today, he did last year at Deauville when beaten by the Japanese Alohi Ali.

Maybe it’s just not his track?

He and Kalpana both have one thing in common. That is that their only unplaced run was in the Arc, well before today that stat could be attached to him.

One was 8/1 the other 33/1.

I watched back last years Arc a few days back, I’d recommend anyone who’s backed Kalpana to do so too.

Both horse ran unplaced for the first time there, Buick rode a stinker aboard the Fabre 3yr old QualityCar but I couldn’t see any excuse for Kalpana?

The one thing that may have been a thumbs down was that she was ridden too wide perhaps? Too wide, too prominent?

But when let down she didn’t find much and was caught easily by Sosie. She only has half a furlong of kick, so if she’s drawn wide I’d hold no hope. She’d need to be handy and hope that she can hold on after taking a 1L or two out of those behind.

Dela/Rico - I'm not THAT hot on her in the race - I just think her price is my estimation is at least
double what she'd be worthy of if within a few pounds of last year...and I'd hate to be laying her.

I've often slated Coolmore on here and I'm no fanboy, so it's a big step for me to be taken with one of
their inmates, but sometimes you just have to doff your cap and admit a performance was of the highest
class...and she did that in the race last year - I suspect the conditions will fall in her favour come
the big day and with ultra-reliable C&D history coming to the fore...she's already worn that T-shirt
and might well replicate it.

Being objective, I'm also seeing the negatives against her and I can understand how many would be so easily
dismissive of her as she's clearly not yet fired at full pelt this year...though I've seen enough to satisfy me.
I just don't have sufficient belief in her connections.

As fr Manduro..

Milers don't win it - stayers do, but as mentioned they can run a solid enough races though it's rare - the only
one I can think of on the premises is the excellent mare Luth Enchantee in the early 80s and if memory serves, I think
that was her first shot at more than 8f.

I always thought Manduro looked very comfortable over a mile, suggesting to me he would've struggled over 12f in the
highest grade (though a G1 winner at 10f) and despite him being the best horse (if he'd lined up) even in a below average
renewal, it would've been a tough assignment - the cards fell right for the fortunate Dylan Thomas and even more so in him
being up against 'moderate' opposition for the usual standard...and he's almost prevailed by default.

That said...who am I to question one of the greatest judges in history? As Andre Fabre said before Manduro's 5yo campaign
kicked off...he's strengthened up and improved significantly - that assessment was proven to be bang on the money!
He even went on to say that he was as good as ANYTHING he'd ever trained!

That is some statement...so even after-timing I fully understand the enthusiasmHappy

Hugo - to be fair to Kalpana, I think she's an improved performer judged on her Ascot win...and I'm a firm believer
in a horse's peak being at 5yo. Then again...maybe Calandagan has regressed slightly which would actually be more
plausible examining the numbers - who knows? I'm sure he'll bounce back in style.

Also...there's a long rap-sheet for top quality hoses not perfoming at a max on Arc day - the list of 'bewildering'
no-shows is arguably better than the actual winners!Shocked

Constitution River is very likeable. He looks a horse who just does enough and keeps some back for himself. The trip should be no problem. But it is not normally the MO of Ballydoyle to send their best 3 year old colt to the Arc.
Benvenuto will surely be their Breeders Cup horse.
So there is a possibility Constitution River may come here, but the Irish Champion will be his main Autumn target.

I backed Diamond Necklace after her Pouliche victory for this, but i am not confident of her staying the trip, or even running here.
