The longer it takes for BHA to post the photo the more fishy it gets. Last time this happened was the Perth debacle. Surely not two f-ups in the same year?

Very strange however. They knew the result in the paddock long before it was announced

The print is STILL not uploaded to BHA. Usually takes a couple of minutes.

Print is finally published on BHA. Can't tell with the lines in the way. But have to trust the judges would have got that right.

Must have been one of those head-up head-down illusions when the slo-mo cam is not exactly on the line.

Some cameras are capable of 20,000 fps
The racing ones are 6000 fps
At 30mph, this equates to 2mm per vertical slice of image
On what planet can a GPS chip come close to that?

If people can't make their minds up from looking at the still on the line, then surely a DH would be the best result. I looked at the head bob, the VERY slow motion replay as they hit the line, then the still frame, and STILL couldn't separate them. That should have been a dead heat. Just to add, my bet was down the field, so no pocket talk.

everyone is guessing where the line is, watch a race from Greyville, there are clear red lines showing exactly where the finish is. We are a joke compared to them
Report Ramruma July 4, 2026 4:42 PM BST
They could have settled it more quickly if the Hong Kong guy told them to stop fannying about and give it to the shorter-priced runner.

The mown strip is mere ya guide. The ITV camera is not within 10 yards of the photo finish camera on the July Course.
Report Hugo-Hackenbush July 4, 2026 5:15 PM BST
be more of a guide in a brass house.
Report saxon farm July 4, 2026 5:31 PM BST
Agreed Hugo.
Those using it as definitive are sadly deluded.
It’s often vaguely mown by the most junior grounds person several hours before racing.
Report 1st time poster July 4, 2026 5:34 PM BST
whats the mowed line got to do with it, most people couldnt split them when studying a b lown up photo at their leisure, when already knowing the result
Report kingofthebop July 4, 2026 5:40 PM BST
do you realise that the mirror is 6-8 inches wide, the mown strip is about 18 inches wide, the gap in the rails is 12 inches, the actual line is less than 1/16 of an inch, it is anywhere between above.Unless the winners head is clearly in front throughout all those you are guessing. The bloke that fixes the mirror to the post probably wouldn't understand what we are talking about.
Report Hugo-Hackenbush July 4, 2026 5:50 PM BST
mirror is 6"
Report saxon farm July 4, 2026 5:58 PM BST
^
Largely correct, with a couple of glaring errors.
The actual line is minuscule, a lot less than 1/16th of an inch.
The mirror alignment is an intricate process of precision taking place a couple of hours before racing. During which the photo finish operator has an assistant on track lining up the mirror spot on to the requirements ensuring any image is directly correct to the camera.
Report saxon farm July 4, 2026 6:01 PM BST
In blunt terms, the photo finish camera, is akin to looking through the crack of a door to determine what happens first.
Report 1st time poster July 4, 2026 6:11 PM BST
for on course photo finish punter,s of the past ,they dont.didnt look at horses coming /getting over the line, they concentrated on the line and let the horses heads come to them
Report kingofthebop July 4, 2026 6:40 PM BST
watch Greyville race now, red lines everywhere, you can tell exactly where finish is, you have to see it to understand what i'm saying

James Owen won one big pot but will try to add a second on appeal after Magnetude was declared the runner-up in an agonisingly tight photo-finish.

Sportingsilvermine landed the £125,000 Old Newton Cup for the Newmarket trainer but it was the result of the earlier 1m6f handicap, worth £100,000, that caused some annoyance for Owen and Magnetude's owners the Gredley family.

The Andrew Balding-trained Mythical Bay was called the winner by a nose, but it took the judge five minutes to decide on that outcome, during which time Owen's runner was odds-on at one point on the exchanges to get the nod.

Owen said: "It was very close. I've looked at the photo in the stewards' room and our horse has a definite line on his nose. It's very blurred on the winner and it took so long to call. We need to look at the photo from the other side, but we plan to appeal."

Sadly James Owen does not understand the intricacies of the archaic UK photo finish technology. However I don’t blame him for appealing.

He asks to look at the photo from “the other side”.
This is not possible on this occasion as the mirror only covers approximately and at most 75% of the racecourse. As the finish was completed on the near side, beyond the mirrors field of reflection.

This was a strage one...I was at Newmarket yesterday and as the two runners flashed past the post everyone thought the eventual winner had got it.

But the slow-mo showed how close it was and the photo betting favoured the runner up.

I was still convinced the winner had held on and managed to get in £38 of £100 at 2.8 on the photo betting.

But then I thought again and traded back to take a £26 profit either way.

Eventually, it was £26 for nothing BUt I was lucky because if that is not a dead-heat then there never will be one!

On the BHA site the white lines blur the noses so that is not a reliable guide.

Quite how the BHA manages to get out of bed in the morning given their own stupidity is beyond me!!
