Very sad, 65 no age to go these days. The "Dickinson Days" in the early 80s were a great time to be following NH racing.
Brad leading home the Famous Five on Bregawn is an everlasting memory.

I will have to dig out his autobiography to read again, The Wayward Lad - fav horse of mine as well as being a very apt title to describe Brad's colourful life.

Was still riding when I started taking an interest in NH in the 90's. Always thought he was a pretty decent jockey. Not unusual for a fella to die in their mid to late 60s' unfortunately even in this day and age.

So young for dementia to get him and my thoughts are with his family.

Great jockey,Great biography.Rest in peace Brad.
Report DrGordons July 2, 2026 6:53 PM BST
Yes SA, the Morley Street ride was one the best ever. He was an excellent jockey, a real horseman and a genuine, kind, funny guy. The form of dementia he had was fast moving - sadly when came over from France last year to say hello/goodbye it was a bit too late. In my view he was treated very harshly over passing information to The Milkman. If passing info is the crime, then it doesn't really matter whether the recipient was a drug dealer or a bloke down the pub. The authorities never gave him a chance to build up his business. A sad story and a sad loss.
Report Mr Spock July 2, 2026 6:58 PM BST
Francome was done for something similar but he seemed to be forgiven for it.
Report uptheirons July 2, 2026 7:00 PM BST

How was it different? By the way Fred Winters wife never forgave Francome.

Fabulously talented rider, bit reckless lifestyle early doors and a tad too easily led. Jolting shock dementia continues to claim relatively young sporting giants

But…..

Francome and an endless list of others still carry the stigma…..
Report uptheirons July 2, 2026 7:18 PM BST

When it was made known that he was suffering with an aggressive form of dementia things did look bleak - nonetheless it still comes as a bit of a shock. Wonderfully talented rider with a distinctive gait. Tarnished his reputation when becoming involved with Wright but there is an abundance of positives to remember him by. Think the performance of Sunny Bay when runner up in the GN for the second time was rated by Timeform as the best performance in the race since WW2. Jonathan Powell’s interview with him after Bregawn’s GC was a cracker and testimony as to why we should wait for the jocks to weigh in before interviewing them instead of this mike in the face nonsense straight after the race.
Report geordie1956 July 2, 2026 9:34 PM BST
Very sad news to read as he is of my generation which brings it close. He was a wonderful jockey and gave many horses a wonderful ride but I will always remember Bregawn when winning the Gold Cup.He had his indiscretions in life but lets remember some of his many big race triumphs

RIP fella

Well well, I’ve always said one of the very bad apples, from the 3 horse odds on ride, to jumping off one at Newbury to his antics on the all weather jumps plus the Brian wright stuff, he was talented but driven by money to bend the game, he will be remembered but not for good riding,I only have 2 more jocks that fall into his ilk and how bad he was, rip

RIP Graham. He rode Collier Bay to a great victory in the Champion Hurdle. I had horses with Jim Old at the time and Brad rode some of them, notably Meister. Brad rode him to his first hurdle win at Exeter but as Meister was never a good jumper of fences, he lost the ride to firstly Peter Scudamore who won on him at Worcester and then Simon Sherwood who won 3 more chases on him. Fortunately all of the connections to Jim Old's yard were on Collier Bay when he beat Alderbrook and a good field very easily so he will always be a hero to us. If you care to watch the video you will see one of the best rounds of jumping ever.

Think Francome was different class to brad, anyway francome was recorded by a telephone recording of his conversation with winter, alleged, and that would have finished the game but because the recording was done from the bottom of the telegraph pole  and illegal recording by the daily mirror , francome got high court injunction to stop publication and it was glossed over, but it’s alleged that they were bending races and if it had come out would have blown the game up, be interesting if that recording ever sees light of day one day when it’s time
