Must have been told to get a lead. Once he was keen on front then he had to adapt as hooking it right back behind the other fancied runners with no cutaway was doomed to fail. SMP is infamously specific with instructions so I guess the jockey felt he had to try and follow them. Impossible to know how it would have done without the hooking.

Maybe, but that was due to fighting it. SMPs are renowned grinders typically, but as I say it can never be known for sure. I typically prefer it if the jockeys don't fight them as they may as well give the race away at that point anyway
