He hit the horse twice in the last furlong and a half and made minimal effort to win and still nearly did, he was either knackered or cheating or both

If you thought he got beat deliberately by giving it a hard race and
finishing a close second you should give it up. What did he achieve iyo?

I did. He laid up in second spot and gave it two huge backhanders 2 1/2 out,
why would he do that if the intention was to lose?
