Possibly the greatest and most honest jockey of our lifetime. If he is on a fav it wins, 2nd fav either wins or is second,   never lets punters down.  I get it some people don't like him, but he is the Messi of horse racing.

The number of trainers who book him every day confirms what they think. In my view he has gone up a level this year so far. Just hope he can keep focussed on riding.

Why are so many jockeys named Oisin? Was there a tv heartthrob called Oisin in Ireland a couple of decades ago? (Presumably many Harrys were named after HRH.)
Report saddo June 9, 2026 10:41 AM BST
Oisín is a celebrated figure in Irish mythology, renowned as a warrior and the greatest poet of the Fianna. The son of the legendary Fionn mac Cumhaill and the fairy queen Sadhbh, his name translates to "little deer"

I'm hoping he wins on Harry Knows, 2.48.
Report stu June 9, 2026 11:26 AM BST
He's a 'binary' jockey - great or awful - play Russian roulette at to which one you will get if backing his rides. Plus, he is overbet, so shorter prices often.

I'm never sure if posts like this are serious - why follow a jockey, given they vary so much, and level stakes profit...? hah, fat chance.
Report sageform June 9, 2026 11:57 AM BST
Agree about overbet which is true of any of the top riders flat and jumps. You have 3 choices. Carry on following, be selective or lay them. Your choice. How overbet are Skelton's? The tipping comps confirm to me that betting very short prices give you a very high strike rate but not much profit. The sweet spot for me is between 2/1 and 6/1. At least the tipping comp does not cost you real money.

Report uptheirons June 9, 2026 3:44 PM BST
If I fancy a horse and he is riding it is certainly not a negative.

Report stu June 9, 2026 3:45 PM BST
Level stakes profit is easiest way to judge whether he's worth following. and that has a minus after his rides...

Fair enough to compare it to others I suppose, but not really worth bothering for a profit reason.

big priced winners skew LSP figures
also the more rides a jockey has the harder it is for a punter to overcome the overround

9959 UK/ire rides w/o a claim, 1779 winners
proportional staking to match £10, BSP used & ignoring commission (for reasons stated above) gives stakes 17375.56, p/l +399.45, roi +2.3%

big sample & no skew
Report wondersobright June 9, 2026 4:26 PM BST
pl markets for even less variance
9908 UK/ire markets with pl market, riding w/o a claim, 4303 places

Just out of interest, have you ranked them all of profitability using these approaches? Many above him?
Report wondersobright June 9, 2026 4:52 PM BST
haven't ranked them as too many problems comparing jockeys what with jockey claim situation, usually too small sample sizes etc
but approx 1/3 of all jockeys have figures as good as that or better
Report wondersobright June 9, 2026 4:55 PM BST
that's on either win or pl metric individually
some don't tally (eg +ve & +ve or -ve & -ve)
can be due to variance etc not a big enough sample, default riding style is another big factor

but positive roi in win & pl markets after near 10k rides w/o claim & esp after comm applied...beyond doubt he's top jockey
hope useful to you

All the people bumming him up how about putting your bets up - pre race - on here, and we can all see how profitable, or otherwise he is to follow? Not going to happen is it? He rides too many losers, too many short ones, and it's impossible to dodge them all.

The sport is in really bad shape - too many ordinary jocks, too many ordinary horses, and too many bookmaker races. That's what is on the menu day in day out. These days it's far too easy to find something better to do. I will dip in to Royal Ascot (most should at least be trying), but other than that quite happy to watch the cricket, football, tennis, and athletics instead. The product has shot itself in the foot. You could halve the number of meetings, and it would still be too many.
Report the dealer June 9, 2026 7:08 PM BST
Was at Carlisle yesterday, the ordinary jockeys and the ordinary horses, produced a great day's racing imo others of course, may think differently. Everyone there yesterday certainly looked like they were enjoying themselves in the sunshine.

DD,no sane person is recommending backing anybody blindly.
As I have already said,if he is on one I fancy I am happy enough if the price is right
Report differentdrum June 10, 2026 10:57 AM BST
And I'm not saying that.

If you are that confident that he is that good just put up your selected bets and see what happens. Clearly nobody is that confident.

The Dealer, if you like watching mediocre rubbish that's your choice. What was the crowd, and what would it have been if it wasn't sunny?
Report the dealer June 10, 2026 11:29 AM BST
I didn't have time to count the crowd or ask everyone if they were here purely for the weather but I've been there plenty times in the past when cold and wet and the crowd in my opinion holds up well there.

I bet there were more happy and entertained at Carlisle on Monday than Epsom Saturday, regardless of the jockeys or the class of horse.

Grade 5/6 may be rubbish to you but going racing regularly,l it certainly isn't rubbish to everyone.

Only my opinion and what I've seen, each to there own

my replies were in response to the comment that oisin is overbet
which he quite clearly is not

bet what you like from whatever he is riding seems sensible to me, likely to be small +EV

Report stu June 10, 2026 1:13 PM BST
I'd actually be amazed he is not overbet given the amount that show fanship for him, even in this forum sample.

As you said he is a losing punt (with commission) and his level stakes is a minus figure, and there is a large % who has as good or better overall returns.

Not overbet?

Report wondersobright June 10, 2026 1:28 PM BST
is true approx 1/3 of jockeys have a better roi but few have the same it over the volume of rides oisin has done it over
so you can be substantially more confident in oisin's numbers than you can jockeys with fewer rides
Report wondersobright June 10, 2026 1:29 PM BST
remember in some of the 1/3, because of small sample sizes, randomness has played a part in them being profitable
Report wondersobright June 10, 2026 1:30 PM BST
whereas for oisin it's a negligible factor after near 10k rides
