Always go both days chewy. You have chosen wisely with your lodgings and transport to the course. Quite civilised on those trains and a really nice walk from the station to the course which gives you a great view. Stop on the top of the hill at TC just outside station and have a gaze. We may be OK with the weather as well.

If you are driving Guidford would be ok. Train is possible but take a long time

I'd seen the view across the downs from the road on Google maps when I was checking out the stations. It does look stunning.

If anyone is going by train the correct station is Epsom Downs (not Epsom).

thx. looked on trains guildford to epsom direct takes 30 mins or so, but guildford to epsom downs is at least 2 stops and takes ]around 75 mins

No hassle to use Tattenham corner station  but a slightly longer walk!

please ignore imp123. He is, I regret, talking hogwash. If you want to walk for 30 minutes across pavement-less roads and half a golf course, go to Epsom Downs. If, however, you wish to pop outside the station and get on a shuttle bus to the track, go to Epsom. Tattenham Corner is close to the  5f start and is about 10 minutes walk on a perfectly decent road alongside the track.

That's true. Tattenham Corner is the closest. I think the line is less accessible on the mainline stations.

chewy - I've been to 10-12 Derbys and similar number of Oaks. First Snow Night, last, Workforce in 2010. Times have changed and the crowd is nothing like it used to be.

Every single time was by train to Tattenham Corner, with a buzz in the carriage with everyone talking up their fancies or noses buried in the Sporting Life/Racing Post. Depending which way you are sitting, you can see part of the course and the running rail before you are aware that you have reached your destination, evoking child like feelings of wonderment and sense of the big occasion.

One tip I would pass on is to leave before the last race to avoid unbearable queues at the train station for your return journey. We used to lo leave after the Derby itself, which IIRC was race 5 on a 7 race card (I see that there are 8 races this year), with the last 2 races being impossible run of the mill handicaps, not really befitting Derby Day imo, so no big deal to miss them

Good luck chewy11. Epsom is one of the few courses in England that I have never been to. Too close to the centre of London for my liking.

Surprised that so many big racing men haven't done the top tracks. Ascot Goodwood Sandown Newbury Epsom  all done by age 30. From North Yorkshire.  Maybe you were too busy working !

social/workies clubs are a naartern thing doubt there's many club trips arranged from Brighton,s,Hampton to York, ayr,haddock etc, but plenty from up naarth or used to be,to RA,chelt,derby,glorious good,aintree etc etc

You must really hate London, Sage I've done nearly all the "Big Meetings" except this one & I don't know why that is. I have to say I prefer going mid week these days. I've done 3 of the last 4 Breeders Cups with the money I've saved from Cheltenham alone.

Looks like the weather will be kind to us tomorrow, Donegal. Bags packed, train at 11.30 should be in the digs for 4Pm. Like a kid at Christmas

It's a long way from London, Sageform. If you take Croydon as the southernmost tip of suburban London, it's 10-11 miles south west of that.

I  was premature in my earlier post as it looks good for tomorrow but quite bad for Saturday. Being so close allows you to arrive proximate to the first and naff off early if it is bad. The space inside the Duchess's Stand is quite cavernous so there is, relative to many "summer"  courses, plenty of cover. Have a great day Chewy. You'll hear me from Coulsdon if Pierre wins. My biggest ever bet on the Derby to give my biggest ever win on any race.

I am long past taking long journeys but in my peak racing days I did get to most places. I hate heavy traffic and hate big crowds. Comes of being brought up on a farm that was a mile from the next house I suppose. I have never lived in a road with street lights in my 82 years. I have been to Ascot, Kempton, Sandown and Goodwood several times each and Newbury almost every meeting until they messed it up. Salisbury is just right for me now. My first love is jumps so I was a member at Cheltenham, Chepstow, Wincanton and Taunton for 20 years or more. I like Exeter unless it is foggy or blowing a gale which cuts out most meetings, but not so keen on Newton Abbot although my first good horse, Meister won there twice. Meister was also my only Cheltenham winner in the Bristol Novice hurdle at the December meeting.

Fair play Sageform. Can't see myself ever at Epsom or Cheltenham again either.

For about 15 years I went (from Dublin) to the Oaks and Derby. Happy days.
Once I was so early I walked the 12f course from the start into the straight.

Another year I backed the last in the Oaks and the last in the Derby.

The Queen always waved to me.

Go to Hexham instead, the place is a shathole
