RIP...he was known for years as the "Saturday jockey" as he developed a knack of bagging a lot of races on a Saturday ...a friend used to put all his rides in ew accas...you could ride at two meetings or even three meetings in one day back then...he collected off his winners quite a few times

RIP Tony Ives. Our mortality is evermore brought home to us when we lost friends, family and jockeys who were plying their trade when we first got into racing.

A very good jockey and nice fella, used to ride a few for Brian Mcmahon and Reg Hollinshead whose Remainder Man came 2nd i the 2000gns and 3rd in the Derby. Also rode Provideo who won lots of races as a 2 yo. Sad to hear he's passed away at just 71 yo, RIP Tony.

Remember Provideo in the mid 1980s, what a 2 year old that was, won something like 15/16 races, a bit of a record, doubt its ever been beaten?

Penzance - He contracted sepsis about 18 months ago i believe, followed by skin cancer. Couldn't use his hands so needed 24 hour care
I remember those prolific 2 year olds he rode for O'gorman, Provideo obviously setting the record stands out, but the likes of Superlative and Brondesbury won plenty too. I never realised he was an apprentice when he rode Remainder Man to 3rd place in the Derby, the last to do so. Some achievement.

I had a pleasant disagreement with Tony about the relative merits of the Forest Flower & Minstrella 2yo races when I could see his patience waning with me...but being the gent he was, he stopped a couple of inches away from poking me in the eye

PS - I should've mentioned that meeeting was in late 1986 or early 1987 at a race night in Southport...so the fall out & bad memories of the Cheveley Park disqualification of Forest Flower were fresh in his mind and he was still píssed off I was in the Minstrella camp as just like my women...I've always liked difficult fillies with a bit of temperament
