...this annoying phrase is now getting on my nerves, as every pundit seems obsessed with mis-using the word. It is an adjective , not a noun. "I liked this physically". "Physically, this horse impressed me". Stop  using this perfectly ordinary word  wrongly.

In your last example, "physical" qualifies the noun, "examination". You can have many, many forms of examination but this one was a physical examination so the words "physical" is an adjective in that phrase. The word is used in exactly the same way in both of your examinations. Physical is not a noun.

both examples. Sorry!

physical can be a noun. When used as a noun, it refers to a medical examination of a person's body to check their general health or fitness (e.g., getting an annual physical)

agreed. But they are not using it in that sense. I accept my comment was ambiguous. I was referring to the way they use it. All the best.
