The 2,000 Guineas market has been blown wide open - is there a convincing candidate among the leading contenders?

Verdict
Everything else is available at 33-1 or bigger, so if you if you have a strong fancy that I haven't mentioned, for goodness sake have a few quid on before everyone cottons on, and then email frontrunner@racingpost.com to tell me about it.
Likeable as Bow Echo is, I'm not convinced he's earned the right to be 2,000 Guineas favourite. It would make more sense for the market to put its faith in the Dewhurst form and have Gewan and Gstaad battling it out at the top.
I remember liking Distant Storm's run at the time and, watching the Dewhurst again, I still like it. At a general 12-1, he's quite appealing. Granted a strong pace, his hold-up tactics can work better than they did in October.

AI Overview              Gstaad &  Albert Einstein was mistakenly removed from the Betfred 2000 Guineas on March 31, 2026.

So when he posted his article Gstaad was still an intended runner! Laugh

The ante-post Derby market looks quite enticing - so what does Chris Cook make of the leading contenders?

Verdict
It looks a wide-open race but I find myself much more convinced about the claims of Benvenuto Cellini than others at the head of the market. Maybe we've finally found the right favourite.
For those interested in a pot-shot, an each-way play on Ancient Egypt could be the way to go. The Derby is his target and he'll stay, making 33-1 quite appealing.

Benvenuto Cellini
Trainer Aidan O'Brien
Odds 6-1f
This bonny chestnut stretched out kindly to win a Group 2 on Irish Champions Weekend by five lengths. Started favourite for Doncaster's Futurity after that but faded into third, probably not enjoying the heavy going. Already odds-on with some firms for the Chester Vase on Wednesday, when good going seems likely. Easy to like.

The Senior writers view on

Gstaad (7-1)
Ran too free under restraint in the Dewhurst, which became his third narrow defeat in a Group 1. Had looked a star in the Coventry and looked it again at the Breeders' Cup but probably against horses he was entitled to beat. Disconcerting that Aidan O'Brien seemed to fancy Albert Einstein as his main Guineas contender but Gstaad may now inherit that status. Having been the dominant force in the Guineas, O'Brien hasn't won it since 2019, not wanting to have his horses peak too early in the year.
