A very difficult punting day. Very easy just to put a line through the first. The second is a modest handicap for very decent money where several have probably been plotted up. I have no idea which one's. The third is much better quality, but for less money. Backing O'Neill/McLernon in handicaps served me well last year so went each-way on We're Red And Blue. Couldn't see why he was such a big price. I thought Jet To Monte Carlo looked the best of those heading the market. Each-way on Eachtotheirown in the Grade 1 novice hurdle. Clearly he has yet to show anywhere near what the trainer has seemingly expected. On form he has a mountain to climb, but hopefully, the smaller field is a plus, and more importantly, the hood might help pacify him. For some reason Mullins has gone down the second division route, and I am not sure either of the Elliott runners are entirely reliable. With Lovely Hurling out, the novice chase is just a watch and see. Went with Birdie Conway in the first bumper. Just thought 66/1 was too big, given that Meade has had great success with this family, including The Mourne Rambler. Sierrascope also looks a big price. Not surprised that Il Etait Temps is favourite for the feature. He isn't bombproof, but he is more reliable than the other two. Again a race to watch. In the last race I have gone each-way on Ignite The Moment. He looked a nice type, and appeared to be coming to win his race when departing two out on his point debut.

Good stuff DD. Too many horses already today finishing legless on what is supposed to be good ground. The novice hurdle was like Leopardstown in December and they ambled around in the novice chase where the Mullins' stopped in general. I had thought maybe they over watered and it got sticky but its been pretty dull most of the day. Anyway I'm hoping its the Cheltenham 'bounce' factor for Marine Nationale's sake.

Thanks all.

Nice to at least get one big price over the line. That said it could/should have been better. Outside of the winner, Birdie Conway was the big eyecatcher. She finished really well, and under a stronger ride you have to think she should have finished in four. At 66/1 that wasn't easy to take. To make matters worse the other horse I mentioned was fourth at 33/1. I did think about the extra places, but have been caught out too many times, and the odds are not as favourable as they used to be. The horse in the last was given as bad a ride as you are likely to see. Lined up widest of all with no cover, and pulling like stink. He has then let it shoot through the field, and it was inevitable that he would run out of petrol. Take a bow Jack Hendrick. If they can get him to settle, no surprise if he turns out to be quite useful.

Not sure what to make of the feature. Either the winner is very good, or Marine Nationale and Marlborough are not as good as we have been led to believe. That mistake should really have cooked the winner. It was strange that he went forward in the first place. I was impressed with Nowwhatdoyouthink in the novice chase. Under a better ride he would surely have got a lot closer to the winner. He certainly travelled like the best horse in the race.

Back tomorrow for day two. The Mourne Rambler looks the standout, and hopefully, he gets the job done. Lavery, the only jock to have got beat on the horse, and sometimes he can be a little over confident. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen.

Another tricky day.

Like yesterday, not difficult to avoid the first three races. It's as if the bookmakers arrange the schedule. Radiator Springs was my idea for the first race on account of the jockey booking. O'Brien has already made an impact at both the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals. Unfortunately, the original 7/1 is now 9/2 so very difficult to go all in at that price. The second looks like a who turns up on the day race. In the third, I originally liked the look of Mister Pessimistic but the 10/1 has long gone, and although the ground should be a plus, there are question marks as to the merit of his early season form. He probably needs to improve for the step up in trip. There doesn't seem to be any standout staying novice hurdler so nothing much would surprise in the Grade 1. Having missed all of his Cheltenham engagements, Frankie John did me a little favour at Aintree so I went with him again each-way at 28/1 last night. He was very much ridden to pick up the pieces at Aintree so perhaps he was flattered, we will find out today. Could do with jumping a little more fluently, but the ground should suit. I backed The Mourne Rambler a couple of days ago, and if he reproduces his Cheltenham run, he really should win, and win well. I would mark up that performance as for me he won despite the ride. After two not so good rides in bumpers yesterday, it would be very disappointing to see another here. The handicap chase looks easy enough to swerve. Having backed him at Cheltenham, Where's My Jet is the one I don't want to see win. He jumped poorly and showed next to nothing in that race. The Gold Cup is a race to watch. If Gaelic Warrior backs up he should win, but the odds against have gone. If Fact To File couldn't beat him over shorter, logic suggests he won't beat him over this trip. Inothewayurthinkin's jumping was still nowhere near good enough last time, and he could struggle to even finish third. Hopefully, my best of the day goes in the last. I like the angle of forgiving one bad run, particularly if there seems an obvious excuse. Celestial Tune fits that bill. Back on a quicker surface, I can't see why he is such a big price. He is actually a longer price than he was for the Festival Bumper after the two wins. Perhaps the reason will be revealed, but let's hope not. His experience should be a plus, and the trainer does well in bumpers. Fingers crossed something hits the target again.

Very difficult looking card again today. Well done yesterday DD. Agree with Celestial Tune as has been impressive esp. in her win at Listowel. Huge price on here now. Ruby seems to fancy Bunting for the punting owner/connections. Looks like one that has been waiting for something like this. I must look again at that Cheltenham bumper as I thought CK did well to win. Good luck today to all. Will travel Saturday as I have an interest in the Charity race which is on very late. They could have started with this event on Sat. Maybe. The 2000Gns looks very open. I have backed K Burke for the 1000gns as I think she was out of luck and out of a lot of things, with stall 1  on the Curragh and taking on the battalion that day. The Moyglare race looks the best form maybe and I hope the race provides the winner. AP dangerous with Precise but he is doing the travelling this time. Venetian to show her run in the Moyglare was unlucky and Burke team to get the filly's classic.

I got a few calls right, but it's the short one's that always do the damage. The Mourne Rambler looked relatively quick at Cheltenham, but he didn't today. Not sure why he needed to be dropped out the back. Yes, he did make what looked smooth headway, but no horse has rocketed home all week, and he just ended up staying on into second. Jock now a 100% on horse, unfortunately that's losing. I thought Frankie John ran better than he did at Aintree. This time they actually had a go, but having looked to have every chance of placing two out, he didn't get home. Perhaps he falls in between, not quick enough at 2m4f, and not a strong stayer at 3m. He should win his novice chases next season. As I inferred, not too surprised at the shock result. Nouvetic impressed in the handicap chase. The Gold Cup was the one race I got spot on. Gaelic Warrior much too good. Fact To File gave out rather tamely. He isn't a strong stayer at that trip. Celestial Tune had every chance in the last, but just ran into one. The winner might be pretty good. She's another from the Denman family, and presumably, she is now fairly short for the Mares' Novice.

Jonjo does send a few over, but We're Red And Blue looked as if he had done enough for the season, although he probably went too hard on the front end. The market didn't want him. Seanicon has his chance, but hard to argue there is much value in a very competitive race. Petit Tonnerre has ran badly enough to return to last years winning mark, and is reunited with McLernon.

It doesn't get any easier today with the chance of rain on watered ground to further complicate matters. As if the bookmakers need any further help.

No standout in the opener. I will be keeping an eye on Techno Davis. An expensive store, judged on his point this won't be a sufficient test. Even with the non runner the second race looks too trappy. Then you have the usual suspects, who take it in turns to win, in the banks race. No thanks. The staying handicap is very competitive. I have just had a little each-way on Onewaywest. Much will depend on whether he copes with the pressure on the front end. Very difficult to see anything getting an easy lead. Another competitive handicap chase. I did think about Petit Tonnerre. He bailed me out last year, but he wouldn't want the rain. I backed Pure Steel in the Grade 1 last night, and after some support, he has been shunted back out again. Upped in the trip, he looked ready to take a hand when coming down last time. Hopefully, the faster pace will help him today, and his jumping will stand up to the test. If it does, he has a chance. I don't trust the favourite. He couldn't sustain a full season last year, and perhaps it will be similar story again? The Stayers division is weak so happy enough to give that race a pass. In the last I have gone with the well supported Outofafrika. Would have liked to have made it a win bet, but given what happened with Lavery yesterday, went for the more cautious each-way option.

OK, with both Il Etait Temps and Gaelic Warrior rounding off superb seasons, but the meeting predictably providing its usual surprises in the other Grade 1s. The only plus today was just having the three bets.

I think Techno Davis was the eyecatcher to take out of the first few races. One of the few things I got right. You have to wonder why he was running over two miles. Unless the trainer messes up, he should be winning races. Onewaywest ran a very similar race to We're Red And Blue, prominent and then swamped two out. It didn't matter, but Jones got the horse into a terrible position boxed on the rail. Another handicap favourite goes in, to be followed by another, the second much easier than the first. Racing prominently seems to work a lot easier around here over fences than hurdles. Pure Steel ran no race. He travelled like a four-miler against two-milers. Not one to trust as he cut out completely when you might have at least expected him to be staying on. Kopek Des Bordes threw it away, and he isn't one to trust either. About the only time I was on the right side of Bob Olinger was the very lucky Cheltenham win, but still good to see him go out on a winning note. Heard Meade talking about The Mourne Rambler and suggesting it was a rough race. Isn't it down to the jock to keep the horse out of trouble? Talking of said jock, that's the last time I can justify putting anything on one of his mounts. Awful again in the last today, again on a very well supported horse. Even managed to keep it of the three. Didn't get the horse to settle, and then looked worse than a 10lb claimer in the finish, just leaning over the horses neck, rather than driving it forward. Just like The Mourne Rambler, he was staying on again at the line. No surprise if he turns out to be the best horse in the race.

Ruby Walsh suggested tomorrow was a better punting day. Presumably, three odds on favourites are his idea of good bets?
Report differentdrum May 1, 2026 10:16 AM BST
Odds on shots are not for me so no bets at Punchestown today. My only bet is Ghost Mode at Ascot 4 places at bigger than the current odds. Stable I don't trust, but the owner had Montague Menace run an absolute shocker at Epsom, and I am hoping this might be payback. The fitness advantage is obvious.

A quick run through at Punchestown. I am assuming they haven't had the expected rain, and Cause For Comment has halved in price for the Hunter Chase. Wonderwall is the class act on quicker ground, but his effort at Cheltenham was woeful. I was impressed with Dinoblue last time, but given Panic Attack's subsequent efforts perhaps it wasn't as good as it first looked? She should still win. The novice handicap chase looks a minefield, but the way things have been going, the favourite will probably win. King Rasko Grey looks a class above, but too short for me. I did think about Lord Byron each-way, but realistically, he isn't going to beat the favourite. Everything was set up for Lossiemouth to win an ordinary Champion Hurdle. I think she is a little too short today, but again, she should win. I might have taken Wilful each-way, but the presence of Glen Kiln rules out the easy lead. Easy to put a line through another big field handicap hurdle. Cityofblindinlites looks hard to oppose in the last, but with no small thanks to Lavery, The Mourne Rambler form has been let down twice already this week. I see punters are actually backing him again as he tries to get the hat trick up for the bookmakers. No point in each-ways if the win part is very unlikely, or the initial price isn't 25/1+. Nothing fits that bill today.

Well the least said about Ghost Mode the better. Owner has had two very well backed horses this week and both have run absolute shockers. This one was a million after 50 yards. Yard an absolute nightmare to get right.

The odds on treble just about landed at Punchestown. I think Dino Blue might still be improving so hard not to see the same again next season. King Rasko Grey scrambled home, but got in too deep to plenty of flights, and was probably unsuited by less of a stamina test. Lord Byron very nearly did beat him. Lossiemouth comfortably landed the odds. Golden Ace ran a much better race in first-time cheekpieces. That's now two good runs at Punchestown. She, rather than Glen Kiln, was the spanner in the works of Wilful getting the easy lead. Even so he probably ran a career best in third. It's been a very mixed bag for the O'Neill runners this week. Elsewhere, a great race for the Hunter Chase, with Wonderwall bouncing back from his dismal Cheltenham flop. Not sure whether the jock wanted to keep him away from the favourite, but they eventually came together and had a terrific scrap. And who would have thought it, after messing up twice, Lavery got his winner in the last. If only he had kept it that simple on the other two. The favourite ran a shocker.

Ends with an horrendous looking punting card. Softer ground today?

Fountain House should go close to backing up in the first. The second race is the first of several very difficult looking handicaps. If previous races are anything to go by in these chases you need to look for something on the front end. J'Arrive De L'Est might fit that bill, but he was absolutely woeful last time. Happy to just put a line through the next. I would have liked to have seen Wodhooh given a shot at three miles. The fact that she hasn't makes you wonder. Don't think she has been at her best the last twice. Hopefully, she will get away with it again. The Stayers should be the aim next season with Teahupoo going backwards and Honesty Policy going nowhere. The juvenile picture isn't that clear. Today's favourite was a shock winner of the Triumph. He is plenty short enough to follow up. Matin Midi Et Soir won a Grade 3 nicely, but that was a long time ago and the form is relatively untested. Hard to say there is a lot of value in 5/1 on likely quicker ground. Fired a couple of darts in the handicap hurdle, Laurets D'Estruval and Tripoli Flyer. The latter has more ability than the form figures suggest, and hopefully, he can show it today. Inexperienced jock should be getting used to him by now. A late burn up should suit him. The Mulryan's have another favourite in the bumper. Will he follow the lead of their impressive winner, or the dreadful favourite yesterday? I will be keeping an eye on the three at the bottom. They all have reasonable pedigrees, but fillies and mares can often be on the small side, hence a decent pedigree in a small yard.

Fountain House duly bolted up in the first. Tougher race, but made no difference. Another handicap favourite lands the spoils in the next. J'Arrive De L'Est, very weak before the off, checked out very tamely again. He looks to have been very well sold. They were strung out like washing in the following handicap chase, giving the impression it was much harder work on the chase track, but the time didn't particularly back up that view. Not really surprised that Wodhooh got turned over in a relative speed test. Surely this defeat makes it more likely she will now go up in trip? The race at Newbury would seem like a decent starting point. Danny Mullins proving again how dangerous he can be with a no pressure ride. The juvenile form remains a puzzle with the two favourites bombing out today. No real surprise that the race was won by a flat bred on quick ground and on a speed favouring track. The handicap hurdle was another each-way bummer with Tripoli Flyer throwing away a winning chance, and Laurets D'Estruval finishing one off the places. It looked as if Tripoli Flyer carted Fern O'Brien again, and you just knew he was going to bungle the last. Probably only needed to delay the run - if possible - for another hurdle. Not sure how much quality there was in the bumper, but Crystasia was in a different league. None of bottom three showed enough to be of immediate interest. Only Fiery Robin had much of a go, but paid for doing so.

Agree about Crystasia. Went on my list to follow immediately. He may have beaten trees but there was something about the way he did it that really impressed me.
