I don't want to be peedanthick but would the gravy and cauliflower cheese kinda intermingle andgive birth to a bastardo mix which is neither here nor there? (sounds v nice otherwise)
Report StillLearning April 10, 2026 6:30 PM BST
always amazes me how you can keep them in your cupboard for like 6 years and they never go off

I used to love them, but the calorific content is verging on a joke Laugh

You may as well have 6 Krispy Kreams Laugh
Report Mr Spock April 10, 2026 6:36 PM BST
Best only have them occassionally, they taste nice but are full of shoite.
Report Busyfool April 10, 2026 6:44 PM BST
ang on. this is important

you cant put fray bentos in a microwave, unless its a pudding, which might be possible

the pastry is the best bit and has to be ovened

broccoli and caulifower should never be on the same plate (or any plate, imo. yuk). it has to be chips and beans

as its in a tin, it will keep forever, so talk of sell by date and freezer?? is bizarre

i will be off to a car boot sale this weekend to sell the 3 i have in the cupboard after doing me absolutes laying jack kennedy at wexford in the plaice market  Sad

Key Aspects of Fray Bentos Pies:
Preparation: Requires a robust can opener to remove the lid before baking at 200°C (Fan 180°C) for around 30 minutes until the pastry is golden brown.
Varieties: Includes Steak & Gravy, Minced Beef & Onion, Chicken, Chicken Curry, and vegetarian options.
Ownership: The brand is currently owned by Baxters.
History: Named after the town of Fray Bentos, Uruguay, where it began, the original factory is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Popular varieties like Steak & Kidney or Steak & Gravy (425g tins) contain roughly 600–700+ calories per whole pie, making them high-calorie meals often rich in fat

We used to love a fray bentos as kids. But one time it was dished up it tasted disgusting and had melted plastic floating around in it. Mum contacted the company and they turned up with a load of freebies. Apparently a plastic scraper had gone missing from the factory and ended up in our piePlain

When I first started in the shipyards I remember the communal tea being made with that thick condensed milk in a tin, not even sure if it is still sold.?
Report leif April 10, 2026 10:30 PM BST
Fussels milk been rebranded to Carnation condensed milk.
It was that concentrated back in the day you could spread it on bread and make a sandwich out of it, if you didn't mind your tongue curling up automatically.
Report GLASGOWCALLING April 10, 2026 10:34 PM BST
Yes, this was really thick like treacle, not the watery carnation condensed, and yes I recall it being put in sandwiches and on cereals. LaughGrin

Is Fray Bentos still exist? I think it was a tin of minced (meat). Only had it once with a slice of bread.

Doesnt Finchy lambast David Brent in the office for saying the capital of Argentina was Fray Bentos in the quiz episode?
Report bettinghelp April 11, 2026 12:28 PM BST
I'm an expert on Fray Bentos supermarket pricing.

Price is either £2 (rarely), £2.20 (occasionally), £3 (usually) or £3.10 (currently) depending on the whim of the store.

Wait till a £2 or £2.20 day and stock up.Cool
Report impossible123 April 11, 2026 12:40 PM BST
Is it available in any supermarket? I might get one for old time sake.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves April 11, 2026 1:24 PM BST
Some friends of mine named their son Benedict, which they thought was very sophisticated, until I pointed out that if their son joined a Spanish monastery, his name would be Fray Bentos.
