I had my debit card hacked recently whilst I was in a pub.
In the pub I just presented my card on to the card machine and the card was never handed over to the bar staff. The card never left my possession. I never let friends or family borrow or use my card.
I bought a round of drinks at 2.34 pm using my card and according to my bank and two minutes later someone managed to order £42 worth pizza /burgers from a shop in a different part of the city and according to Halifax the card was not presented at the pizza/burger store.
Speaking to the fraud department of the bank they said 'these people are very clever' Halifax put the money back into my bank the very next day. No questions asked. I just had to wait for a new card to be issued.
Mentioned this to a friend and he said he never catches a bus as he has a car but someone hacked into his card to pay for a single bus fare. his bank knew what bus it was and at what time and again no card was actually produced.
His bank Metro took 3 weeks before they returned his money!
My questions are 1 How do they manage to do this ?
2 What can one do to avoid this apart from just using cash?
The card details might have been stolen earlier and it is just a co-incidence that the transaction happened right after the pub.
If some gets close enough with a scanner they can capture the card number and expiry date which might be enough for a telephone or internet transaction.
