The Republic of Türkiye changed its official name from The Republic of Turkey on 26 May 2022 in a request submitted to the United Nations Secretary-General by the country's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In any case we are on th brink of Nuclear war and you're worried about how a country name is spelled/pronounced.
Get out of the house more often and you'll be fine.

You should be in a cellar, or failing that, under the kitchen table.

These are not new or old names, they are used by woke people in UK deciding that we must use the local name rather than an anglicised "colonial one". Rome should now be Roma, Munich Munchen etc. but as we have never colonised them we can go on using the anglicised version. The Latin countries still use Londres for London and Angleterre or inglaterra for England and why ever not? Are British people offended? Probably not.
As for changing Welsh mountain names to the local ones, that is crazy. Who will book a holiday near Yr Wyddfa? Especially when they find that the speed limit is 20mph. We are all free to use the name that we prefer but nobody has the right to impose them.

This is a horse racing forum and you’re discussing wars! Grin

Jokes aside the threat is there just to keep us all on edge is my thinking, it’ll never occur unless with the likes of them get their hands on one.

Sputin loves to threaten with it, his propaganda guy was talking of giving Poland a tactical strike!

Still while worrying about the worst (the place where the majority of worlds grain is grown)  is now polluted for years due to the bombs on the land there, a uni here was testing soil samples from the Ukraine. Plain

Anyway I’m glad I’m out of Londinium Happy Friday!

I take the op's point .I'm sure for a whole lifetime we all pronounced the Ukrainian capital as KiEv with the emphasis on the e as in Edward ,then the war started and thenewsreaders decided we should pronounce it differently.Reminds me of the old West Ham stadium which we all knew as Upton Park ,then since it closed the media referred to it as the Boleyn ground ??? I never once heard it called that when it was open .And who decided that actresses had to be called actors ?? And why ???

100%. I went to Upon Park a handful of times over the years. It was always called that. I had never heard of the term 'Boleyn' as well until after West Ham left. Don't get me going on the bland term 'actor' either.

I'll raise you with 'batter' in cricket. Sod that. Always batsmen to me, always will be. Why should I have to change anything because some liberal type half my age thinks its 'outdated'?

i will refrain from bemoaning neo-linguistic lunacy as i would bore you to death

ukraine had lotsa nuclear weapons but gave them up when russia 'guaranteed' to respect its borders and that 'none of their weapons will ever be used against Ukraine except in self-defense or otherwise in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations'

hows that going? leafy is, of course a putin fanboy. a genuine psycopath

no country will ever give them up after this and the peace-loving scandis are seriously thinking of getting some, and theyd knock em up in a week

thanks be to god the religion of peace and love is so backward and useless it cant make one, but they will acquire them if they take over a state, like pakistan
