Showed his class when too strong at the finish for classy two-milers L’Eau Du Sud and Majborough in last season’s Arkle, while suggesting he’d be even better when upped in trip. He’s done just that this season, and couldn’t have been more impressive when romping home in the 1965 Chase at Ascot. People will try to crab that form, with Il Est Francais disappointing and Pic D’Orhy not running to form, but this is a case where we should be using our eyes – he travelled lovely, jumped brilliantly and was strong at the line over the longest trip he had faced. I was all over him for the King George Vi Chase next time, but that race was steadily run and turned into a sprint, which just didn’t suit him. He looked a bit outpaced when the field began to sprint for home but stuck to his task well to go down by just half a length, emerging as the one who would benefit from a stronger test of stamina. Jango Baie is unbeaten in two starts at Cheltenham, including when strong at the finish over 2m4½f on the New course in December 2024, and could find even more improvement for this longer distance.
Verdict: Back. It looks like a wide-open Gold Cup, but he ticks a lot of boxes.

I do not think the Gold Cup has been the plan since the Arkle. His first two runs the following season were to see if he was a Champion Chase horse.
Sir Gino did not run in the King George, so Jango Baie was not second string to him.
The George was a sprint.
Apart from that, you're spot on.

That’s your opinion and of course it’s incorrect! Willie is a sly old dog and he was even up to his antics with regards where Gaelic Warrior might go after his last run! Remember him saying that he’d run a fine trial for the Ryan Air?! Catch amongst the pigeons remark!

After he’d win the Arkle the interviewer was asking where next for GW? Willie kept it open but was fast to remind the question asker that he’d won the very same 3 mile novice as Gallopin had!! “But we always thought that he had a bit of speed too…”

Correct Sir Gino didn’t but WHO was the favourite for the Arkle before injury last year? Jango was the second string in the Arkle as the trip was seen to be on the short side for him. There’s no JLT or he would have gone for that.
One is a 2 miler the other since way back then wants further.
Going into the Gold Cup all the talk for JB is that he’ll enjoy the further step up in trip.

strontium • February 25, 2026 11:06 PM GMT Willie also said that GW ran a perfect trial for the Ryanair at Leopardstown, so it sounds like he will need to be persuaded. The betting is leaning as you say Hibore, but more clearly for FTF.

Will they go Ryanair?
See his throwaway comment put the cat amongst them…

GW is doubly entered eg GC and budget airline. Why the latter too? To avoid FTF? Why, I can see GW beating FTF in the GC. If GW wins the GC, I'll win antepost. If FTF wins the budget airline race, it rolls onto the present fav for the Epsom Derby. But, these are long ifs.
