Even Mike Cattermole called it a warm up for the Ultima. The horse had never run over less than 2.5 before and has looked one paced over 3 miles! Now beaten 4 times over fences. Quote from nicholls when he won a handicap at Ayr "it was no surprise that the step up to 3 miles brought about improvement" Perhaps it will again now he is going handicapping. £4k second prize nice for a racecourse gallop.

mostly even to slow early pace, winner quickening pace up the straight 2nd time

Pace was slow down the back and you can see the finishing speed up the straight it wasn't a breakneck gallop early on.

I'm assuming trainer & jockey will get referred for that effort. I mean I've seen smaller yards and journeyman jockeys have the book thrown at them in the past for more effort than that. It's no excuse (the lack of any effort by the jockey) that Nicholls told us just before the race it was only there to get qualification for the Ultima.

winner with first time blinkers and beaten fav down in trip, boots will have been filled with two very plausible excuses if any questions asked, well played everyone.

Agree there were always going to be plausable excuses. The issue is the complete lack of any effort by Cobden.

Race 1 - 2:15pm
THE OLBG 'CHASING EXCELLENCE' NOVICES' STEEPLE CHASE (CLASS 3) (GBB RACE)

Harry Cobden, the rider of QUEBECOIS (FR), was asked to explain his riding throughout the race, where the gelding appeared to have finished under tender handling, to be placed second of the three runners, beaten 17 lengths. Cobden explained that his instructions from uptheirons were to sit off the pace and pretend the horse could not keep up. He decided to follow said instructions as uptheirons is an extremely unpleasant and aggressive bigmouth who re-assured him the two-bobbers would not take any action, a fact which he reported at scales. He added that he felt that QUEBECOIS (FR) would further appreciate a step up in trip to 3 miles. His explanation was noted.

money buyers disappointed , this games is bent , when is the next race I can lose money on , then have a good moan! Just a suggestion ,if the game isn't straight , why on earth would you bet on it ?
By:
sageform
When: 17 Feb 26 16:27
I didn't have a bet but I could not understand why a horse that has only won once and that was a 3 mile hurdle would be running over 2 miles for the first time apart from bumpers. I still have my doubts whether a 3 mile handicap at Cheltenham will be far enough. Doyen Quest left him for dead at Exeter and he is another one paced plodder.

By:

The winner had had 7 previous Chase races was blinkered up for the 1st time today and could have run itself into the ground.
Not backing the Fav was good enough for me,Rico.
