I swear Dessie ran at Royal Ascot almost certainly before he embarked on his chasing career.
In something like the Queen Alexandra and finished down the field.
Did I imagine this?

Cant find any record of Dessie running on the flat at Royal Ascot. It seems he only ran once on the flat, on an all weather track at Kempton. He finished 2nd under jockey Brian Rouse.

Did they have all-weather at Kempton in those days?

The Racing Post does not show Dessie running on the Flat but I think their early records are a complete dog's breakfast after a botched merger of the Sporting Life and Racing Post databases when the papers were combined.

However, here is the 1985 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in May:-

Desert Orchid led for about 12 furlongs then faded. Longboat won, beating Gildoran.
