I received a text yesterday from my daughter telling me that the number she was calling from was now her new number
and she needed to make a payment of £1500 (without elaborating on what it was for) but her bank wouldn't allow it for a
few days due to her number change.
I called her (on her normal mobile number as well) to ask about it but there was no answer though that's not unexpected
as she's a typical, too busy to respond, dizzy 25yo so I thought nothing of it - I called again today on that same number
and again no answer so I decided to give her other phone a call again - she knew nothing about it
I was immediately suspicious as I saw it was a Romanian surname who she was supposed to be paying and it would never
work with me because I'm very cynical...and quite impoverished too, as I'm not the sort to have a spare £1500.
But some of you may well be and would think nothing of transferring a substantial amount to your daughters.
I just thought you guys might like to know so you'll be ready for an eyebrow-raising text for your 'daughters'

I don't think so mate...it seems more plausible than most shít scams as it
appeals to a father's kind nature by helping out their daughter...as there will be someone who doesn't question it as £1500 isn't much to them. |

You're also forgetting that many old-timers will just trust and hand over the cash so as I said...this is a more plausible scam than most of them. |

To be honest, it wasn't a surprise that my daughter might've changed her number as I've had dozens of texts
like that over the years from numerous people...though they haven't been accompanied by a handout request  |

Any caller with a strong foreign accent esp S Asian or Nigerian I'll bin immediately. Having said that about a month ago someone purported to be from HMRC rang at about 16:40. This would be considered late to me esp from HMRC. The bloke had a strong S Asian accent which is very uncommon with HMRC. I was also suspicious when he asked for my UTR number. I blew him away. I'd never been asked to quote my UTR number ever over the phone as a security question.
Anyway, I asked him to send me a letter which would be the normal HMRC protocol. One duly arrived about 2 weeks later. I called the number on the letter. The bloke said it was about a penalty (fine) I apparently incurred between 2015 and 2017. I did have a tax query from HMRC then, but the bloke (tax advisor) from HMRC I saw in Sutton Civil Hall sorted it all out to my satisfaction, I'd clearly recall. Nonetheless, I still need to send a "written" letter (not email) to explain my situation to the department concerned. |

As Greg says, this is an old scam. Must work if it’s still going. ........................ A, sort of, relative died of dementia last year. Prior to being diagnosed- one of the triggers for seeing a doctor- she was donating money to scammers everywhere. She'd be one of the morons which irons refers to. |

That is a not uncommon situation saddo. I’ve read several tales of older people feeling that they must contribute to all the charities they are sentimentally co-erced/blackmailed by TV force fed adverts in daytime channels. It’s despicable practise imo.

Preying on the elderly and the vulnerable is how most scams succeed. Especially if they’re and honest and caring person.
Most of us wouldn’t be fooled, but we could still quite easily be defrauded. I’ve got an aunt who keeps her debit card wrapped in tin foil so a passer by couldn’t take a contactless payment from her. |
