Today he has one ride on a 70/1 donkey in a lowly classified stakes (which was just tailed off last). No other rides in the diary.
I never thought he was in the elite class and was thus very lucky to be Sir Henry's no.1 for a good 5/6 years and ride a lot of great horses winning all those Group 1s
However he is also a lot better than the small number of rides he is getting these days. Must be tough for him.

He has been taking style lessons from NicoLaugh

The average jockey of today is better than the average of yesteryear. There is no longer a huge rump of journeymen who you would not trust to put the polos in the right end.

I don't know why that is. Maybe "doing your two" was never a good way of training jockeys. But the point is there is no longer that large body that Queally is (or was) better than.

Here are the trainers who have given Queally rides in 2025 and 26, and how many. It tells a story.

    114 Gary & Josh Moore
     16 George Margarson
     14 Peter Crate
      6 John Queally
      6 D Donovan
      3 Murty McGrath
      2 P Charalambous & J Clutterbuck
      2 Declan Queally
      2 Chris Gordon
      1 Sam England
      1 Pat Phelan
      1 Paddy Butler
      1 Michael Keady
      1 Keiran Burke
      1 John Mackie
      1 Joe Tickle
      1 Ian Williams
      1 George Baker
      1 Ed Dunlop
      1 Daniel & Claire Kubler

You will have spotted my deliberate mistake. I lazily searched for Queally and got a couple of non-Toms. Here is the correct version:-

    114 Gary & Josh Moore
     16 George Margarson
     14 Peter Crate
      6 D Donovan
      3 Murty McGrath
      2 P Charalambous & J Clutterbuck
      2 Chris Gordon
      1 Sam England
      1 Pat Phelan
      1 Paddy Butler
      1 Michael Keady
      1 Keiran Burke
      1 John Mackie
      1 Joe Tickle
      1 Ian Williams
      1 George Baker
      1 Ed Dunlop
      1 Daniel & Claire Kubler

Ramruna - you make an interesting point and I think you're probably correct but I still think on ability and experience he deserves a lot more rides and in better races.
For example conversely I've never understood why Rab Havlin gets so many rides and the unwavering support of the Gosdens. Its a strange world and not always fair.
Report uptheirons January 21, 2026 2:43 PM GMT
Havlin gets plenty of rides because he is a good judge of a horse and can keep his mouth shut
Report cloone river January 21, 2026 5:17 PM GMT
I think Tom gets two nominations to Frankel every year so financially he is doing ok.
Report Busyfool January 21, 2026 5:22 PM GMT
That might explain his lack of rides

He would be very sore after that
Report HoratioNelson January 21, 2026 5:33 PM GMT
I am pretty sure some trainers employ jocks who can either keep schtum, say the right thing when asked and do as they are told....not necessarily riding skills or styles.

Cecil, a far better judge than most liked him and his style.

Iv'e never been a fan but he can ride to orders, that is for sure.

Not today Tom....
Report uptheirons January 21, 2026 5:36 PM GMT
He certainly needs some luck being with HaleyLaugh
Report uptheirons January 21, 2026 5:36 PM GMT
BTW,Barney didn't use bad jockeys
Report HoratioNelson January 21, 2026 5:39 PM GMT
Barney used jocks who could keep their gobs shut

Trust was everything for Barney

Given the trainer stats, that he is the partner of Hayley, that he is apparently a key member of the team at GLM/JM stable and he is 41, perhaps he is semi-retired.

Big Rab took decades to win a group one race….strange considering he rode for one of the best …..Manton then to Newmarket….

Quealy got lucky with HRAC…..became a passenger on the machine…..
Report uptheirons January 21, 2026 5:47 PM GMT
Rab has always been well looked after but realised that he was, at best, second choice
Report uptheirons January 21, 2026 5:48 PM GMT
Nonsense,Aceform.
If the horse was good enough Tom would win

Blackbarn post 17.41 is correct. He struggles with doing 9.6 these days

They had a recent baby boy and I am not joking named him Barney
Report Newmarket-spurs January 21, 2026 7:12 PM GMT
Glad he seems to be doing ok (especially if he has any shares in Frankel). He always came across as a nice guy in interviews.
Report blackbarn January 21, 2026 7:42 PM GMT
Thanks Mr C.   You may have noticed that I did not mention the famous Frankel nomination(s). This was deliberate because it is hard to find any solid evidence that he actually has such a nomination right, but if he has Anorak's quote on here in 2019 may be relevant.

"It's standard practice for the rider of a Group 1 winner to receive an annual nomination as and when the colt goes to stud, although of course, not all of them are so lucrative as Frankel. It was concealing payments like this that first got Lester into trouble with the taxman. If Queally is getting that much annually, then his incentive to ride is going to be reduced by the knowledge he'll be paying top rate tax on every fee he collects.

John was responding to someone posting that he had heard that Tom had been given such a nomination.
Report Newmarket-spurs January 21, 2026 8:16 PM GMT
Thanks Blackbarn - I'll investigate this further. I actually didn't know that the jockeys sometimes got nominations. Besides Frankel he sat on a few superstars. Midday was a big favourite of mine.

Busy fool 17.22 post...funniest one of the year so far, imo
Can't believe it went unnoticed
