This from Kempton's Clerk of the course

“It is frozen, well and truly,” said clerk of the course Barney Clifford.

“We’ve had three consecutive nights of -6C and temperatures of no higher than 2C for the last three days.

“So we need the forecast to improve enormously over the next four days. At the minute, we are unraceable and you can’t have any optimism if you are unraceable on Tuesday afternoon.

“If the forecast comes our way there is a chance of 50-50, but we will know more on Thursday afternoon going into Friday.

“If we were meant to be racing tomorrow, I would have abandoned it this afternoon. But we just have to give it time and see how the forecast plays out.”

Its pissing down here where I live (N.West) and ALL the snow and frost has well gone.

Temps of 6 and 7degrees for 3 days and they still consider abandoning?  There is no way a meeting on Saturday can be in jeopardy with conditions as such

This sport just loves to self-flagellate

This from Kempton's Clerk of the course speaking on Tuesday afternoon.

Clifford said: "At this precise moment we're unraceable. We're frozen solid after three consecutive nights of frost and -6C air temperature, but we've been colder than that on the ground and temperatures haven't risen above 2C in three days."

Temperatures are due to increase on Wednesday but the forecast generally is unsettled.

Clifford also said: "We have sleet, snow or rain forecast for tonight, but we're not sure which we're going to get. Daytime temperatures on Wednesday could get to 3C or 4C, which is a slight help but it's not brilliant.

"On Wednesday night and into Thursday we have more rain, but temperatures aren't that high. Rainfall would help, but it could be snow by Friday lunchtime."

The problem is if Storm FunnyFrenchName goes south as God and nature intend, it will miss Britain but apparently there is a slight chance it will veer north and drop tons of the cold white stuff on Kempton.

Is it time racing took the big freeze into its own hands and introduced an enforced break in the season?

Maddy Playle thinks the unthinkable (or has glanced at the Irish calendar, hard to say really).

Is it all an intrigue, ploy, to reduce the track’s profitability to aid the development campaign?
Just making mischief?  Laugh

The problem with a break is when should it happen

the weather is so unpredictable that you find summer meetings called off due to waterlogging

I remember Pickled Pork being cancelled, unprecedented

If there is a big freeze in spite of all the efforts to tackle global warming, it stops turf racing. If there is a winter break, it stops turf racing.

Warwick is next to no chance of being on.
Forecast gives Kempton little chance too.
Report paulo47 January 7, 2026 5:16 PM GMT
Well I only look at Met Office and for the track its a minimum of 2 degrees and max of 7 degrees , most likely chance of being off = waterlogging .
Report LoyalHoncho January 7, 2026 5:26 PM GMT
To be fair frost can take a while to come out of the ground.
Report uptheirons January 7, 2026 5:28 PM GMT
Indeed it can,Honcho.
Warwick needs a lot of luck for Saturday
Report saxon farm January 7, 2026 5:49 PM GMT
I think both Warwick & Kempton will race.

Saxon 549 post that’s a bit to positive for this forum.

As for a winter break I’ve never heard such nonsense she clearly doesn’t really like horse racing it’s just a job on the gravy train .

The Lanzarote has been called of just 4 times in 50 years even Carlisle in the north which staged the race in 2006 due to kempton having the aw track built managed to get it on.
Report jimnast January 9, 2026 10:46 AM GMT

Report saxon farm January 9, 2026 11:28 AM GMT
I’m not as confident as I was regarding Warwick, with the frost not due to come out of the ground until after 10AM tomorrow.
Report jimnast January 9, 2026 11:34 AM GMT
They have suggested missing a few fences if need be I think the problem Saxon is they can’t get areas covered .ide have settled for one of the two been on

Due to get down to Minus 3C overnight and reach 1C by 11am.
Odds against imo
Report wondersobright January 9, 2026 11:55 AM GMT
if that f/c is correct then warwick will be off
Report wondersobright January 9, 2026 11:58 AM GMT
winter break is utter nonsense

will happen 1 year where its raceable through the break then a cold snap arrives on resumption

just get on with what nature brings but with 20-30% fewer fixtures through the year
Report LoyalHoncho January 9, 2026 2:14 PM GMT
That happened one in three years in the SPL.  Don’t do it now.
Report uptheirons January 9, 2026 2:31 PM GMT
The unpredictability of if and  when it will occur makes it a non starter.
I don't mind a few blank days as the AW is not for me
