Predominantly focused on the Flat, though there may be the odd jumps pick thrown in, particularly in juvenile hurdles where Flat horses are switching codes.

Prediction:
The thread will be a slow burner, with plenty of selections from left field or on the speculative side, with a low strike rate in terms of winners and long losing runs are a possibility.

The odds quoted will be what's on oddschecker with at least one of the main firms at the time of posting, usually late morning / early afternoon.

As I will need all the help I can get (and I'm not jesting after last year!), I am going to claim B.O.G where applicable but obviously will keep a close eye on that with some firms now withdrawing the offer.

DISCLAIMER: I'm just a guy putting up a couple or so selections most days at working men's prices with a bit of reasoning, so if the thread fails, well, what can I say other than it's a tough old game!

Almaqam

Almaqam would appear to be up against it here with him having over 7L to find with Ombudsman on their Royal Ascot form, however, there are reasons to think that Almaqam can get closer to his old rival today.

The selection, who has been described as a "big, heavy and immature" sort in the past, might just be a better horse this year as a 5YO now that he has matured, judging from his win in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh (10.5f, good), which looked a big performance to defeat the subsequent Coronation Cup winner Bay City Roller by 2L, considering he had to do a lot of running early to get into a prominent position before going on to win in a time nearly four seconds inside the RP standard, and in the process seemingly dismissing the perception that he ideally needs an ease in the ground.

His Curragh win came off a seven-month break so not unreasonable to think that such a big effort might have left its mark and that Royal Ascot, for all he ran respectably there, came too soon just 24 days on, so hopefully a two-month break since has acted as the pause that refreshes.
Report GEORGE.B August 19, 2026 12:32 PM BST
Avatar Jet

Avatar Jet, formerly trained in Ireland, was absent for 553 days, but has returned this year under the care of Declan Carroll to win at Southwell and make the frame twice, back at Southwell (1m) and then at Ripon (1m, good), from just five starts. It's the run at Ripon in June that makes him of interest here, as he didn't have the easiest of trips that day from a wide draw and in the circumstances seemed to do well to finish 4th, having been on a contested pace. The second and fifth have won since, while the third (Barley, who also runs in this) has continued to run well in defeat.

He was then absent for 50 days, during which time he missed an engagement due to quick ground, and it's possible the run was needed back at Southwell over 7f from a wide draw, when he didn't see his race out having gone forward.

Avatar Jet does have to prove himself on softer ground, for all he's by Belardo whose progeny generally handle cut in the ground. He's got a potentially good draw in two for one who can go forward in his races, and hopefully his jockey will be alert to avoiding the far rail in the home straight if it appears centre to nearside is where the better ground is.

Avatar Jet, who according to the RP form comment was sweating, went from the front again but didn't see his race out on the ground, so it does seem that he needs a better surface.

Absoluteassignment

Absoluteassignment was a selection over the 5f trip here last time when I wrote:

Absoluteassignment is only rated 64 so doesn't face an easy task in a race of this nature at a top track for all he receives weight from most of his rivals, but he looks sure to be winning races at some point based on his handicap debut at Fairyhouse (6f, good, tongue-tied), where after racing keenly he ran on well to finish second to Stone Bear, who subsequently would be beaten a length by Midnight Dusk over the same C&D, and that 3yo colt would then run out a very impressive winner off a 6f Curragh handicap. The selection reopposed Stone Bear in that Fairyhouse handicap, when he was noticeably weak in the betting, and having been keen again he could only make some late-headway from off the pace.

Absoluteassignment could do with settling better, and it remains to be seen what effect the tongue-tie being left off has, but interesting to see how he fares on this first crack at 5f, with Wayne Lordan taking over in the plate.

================================================================

That was an absolute shocker last time and it takes a leap of faith to pick him again, while it's also fresh in the memory how weak he was in the betting when returned to Fairyhouse on the back of a decent C&D effort there, so perhaps there will be a win in him at some point but it will be when the market vibes are positive, which they haven't been so far today. However, a chance is taken with the return to 6f looking a positive, also a hood may help with him having been keen in his races, and the tongue-tie which was missing last time is reapplied.

Another potential negative is his draw in nine in such a big field, but a chance is taken at big odds.
Report GEORGE.B August 22, 2026 12:13 PM BST
Marajito

Marajito did the thread a favour when winning at Ripon (5f, good) back in the spring. Her victory then didn't prove a springboard to an improved run of form but she's been running okay, including last time back at Ripon (5f, good) when bumping into one who'd been revitalised by a change of scenery, and although there were just the five runners, the third has since just been touched off at Yarmouth in a well-run contest.

I wondered two starts back at Nottingham (5f, g-f), when Marajito seemed to get tapped for a toe at a crucial stage, if she might be worth another try at 6f. Of her three previous attempts at the trip, two came when qualifying for a mark, and the other came at Nottingham last autumn on easy ground when never involved at odds of 80-1 in a class 2 Grassroots Series' Final.

The selection is eligible for weaker races than this one but is on a mark she can win off, jockey Oisin McSweeney has a record of a win and a second from two rides on her, and she's 1-1 at Redcar.
Report GEORGE.B August 22, 2026 8:22 PM BST
A couple of poor ones unfortunately...

The Curragh race was on split screen so I'll have a proper look back at that one later on Replay, but I saw enough to see that Absoluteassignment was well beaten.

I made a note to keep an eye out for Marajito when she was tried over 6f again, but she wasn't winning at any trip this evening, having been too lit up on the front-end.

Cercis

Cercis has been initially rated just 58 after three starts, and so may find better opportunities in handicaps in due course, rather than taking on potentially better types as she does here from the Walker and Haggas yards. However, those two fillies that dominate the betting for this are returning from long absences, so I'm going to take a chance on Cercis, for whom the return to 6f may suit.

Not much went right for Cercis nine days ago at Doncaster (7f, g-f), having been awkward at the start and pulled hard, then having gone clear at one point, she was only headed around half-a-furlong out, ultimately proving no match for a long odds-on Shadwell-owned colt. It did seem on that Doncaster card that getting some cover was no bad thing, so all things considered the effort of Cercis can be marked up, for all it might have been a case of something had to finish second in that four-runner contest, with the second favourite having blew out badly.

The BHA's update page informs us that a strong breeze is forecast during racing, so it remains to be seen if certain tactics are favoured on the  night.

Report GEORGE.B August 24, 2026 2:29 PM BST
WP, I have plenty in the notebook that contest Group 1s, but the point is the market is well clued up about the horses and therefore the betting tends to be accurate about an individual's chance.
Report Whippin Piccadilly August 24, 2026 2:55 PM BST
Maybe. But you can also get hype horses in these races and these invariably go off very short in the betting and thus other runners in the race can represent true value. I would suggest a joint thread whereby we choose selections from class 3 and above races but the first class 3 this week is Novice at Kempton and the Charlie Appleby short priced fav will be tough to beat. So we'd have to wait until Thirsk on Friday for a couple of Handicaps to get our teeth into. There's absolutely nothing wrong with British racing though! They did have one good idea about breaking up a week like this one up with some good competitive racing, but that was soon put in the bin  Plain

Thomas Tallis was only officially rated 38 when contesting a one-mile, 0-55 handicap last time at Southwell, but it didn't look a bad effort based on how that race panned out, with him having to use up some gas to get to the lead and eventually cross to the rail whilst not having much peace on the front-end, in a contest where the two who beat him were ridden more patiently.

His revised official rating is only 44 and he's now into a 0-60 contest, while 7lb claimer Finlay Bassett is still awaiting his first winner after 34 rides, but the selection has only had the six starts to date so hopefully he can build on that latest effort.

Cotai Starlight was a selection last time when I wrote:

Cotai Starlight was the outsider of the field when scoring at 28-1 at Ayr (6f, g-f) last month, and showed that was no fluke by running respectably under a 6lb penalty a week later back over that C&D (g-f) to finish a 2L 4th of 9; the runner-up from the latter contest has won subsequently.

She's been weak in the betting this morning ahead of being tried at 5f and running at Hamilton for the first time, with easier ground forecast, but a chance is taken at a double-figure price in this hands-and-heels race, with her still being open to improvement after just six starts
.

===============================

Her chance was compromised at the start at Hamilton when being squeezed out and on the backfoot thereafter. She still has to prove that 5f is suitable but looks worth another chance at the trip granted getting away on terms this time.

Chapel Island

Chapel Island was a selection last time when I wrote:

It looked a mark-up effort from Chapel Island two starts back at Navan (good) when he was tried beyond 10f for just the second time, having had a tough trip from the widest draw in a field of sixteen, in a contest where the three who finished ahead of him had all been ridden more conservatively.

He finished well held last time, however, in a field of seven at Down Royal, when tried over 13f, so while it's possible the trip might have stretched him, the race might have come soon enough thirteen days on.

The concern today is the drop back in trip to 9.5f on what may be the quickest ground he has encountered, but that penultimate effort suggested he should be up to winning in this 0-60 grade when things pan out more favourably, so a chance is taken in the hope that this doesn't prove to be too sharp a test for him.

====================================================

Chapel Island ran well to finish 3rd at Gowran having had plenty of use made of him when down in trip to 9.5f. In contrast to last time, he's been weak in the betting so far today, now back up markedly in trip to 14f, along with a rise in grade, while having a wide draw to overcome, but a chance is taken at the odds in the hope he gets a reasonably efficient trip returned to Navan.

My Mate Beattie

My Mate Beattie was a selection last time when I wrote:

My Mate Beattie is still a maiden after 26 starts, but only 9 of those have been on turf, and she showed enough last time at Ffos Las (6f, good), from out of the handicap, when finishing a close third, to suggest a basement-grade race can fall her way. The winner has since run well to make the frame in a slightly higher grade at Windsor.

It's a slight concern that the selection has generally been kept away from quick ground on turf, and she does appear to have a bit of a knee action, but I'm going to take a chance at the prices that she back that latest effort up, returned to 0-50 classified stakes company.

=================================================================

My Mate Beattie could only finish 5th of the nine runners at Yarmouth, but had to be switched to the far side for a run in a race where the pace held up, and did enough to suggest she was still in form. She's returned to the AW this evening and back up in distance to 7f, but has made the frame on four occasions over this trip on synthetics including once at this venue.

Post Rider hasn't looked in much form this season, latterly running over longer trips, but it does mean that she's now off a mark 2lb lower than when winning over a mile at Newmarket (good) last October, and perhaps the return to a mile on good ground can prove the catalyst for a return to form. This is an ease in grade for her, and as all three of her career wins have come at around a mile when ridden prominently, blinkers being tried again may just sharpen her up.
Report GEORGE.B August 28, 2026 11:15 AM BST
Hijo De La Luna

A rare selection over hurdles for the thread.

Hijo De La Luna didn't offer much at Ripon (10f, good) last time when perhaps less emphasis on stamina wasn't ideal, but prior to that it looked a respectable effort at Carlisle (11f, g-f) when finishing  third of six, in a contest from which the second and fifth have won subsequently, while the 4th has run well in defeat since.

How the selection shaped then could suggest that a stiffer test over hurdles may be preferable, and also that a sound surface may suit better, so the forecast rain is a concern, but a chance is taken at big odds.

Gonna Fly looked a potential Stakes horse when winning a one-mile Newbury novice on his debut last autumn on soft ground, but he was outclassed when in dropped in trip to 7f on good ground when reappearing in the Greenham Stakes. He won on good to firm when returning to action over two months later at Windsor when upped in trip to 10f, but that was a three-runner contest run at a crawl. Of his two handicap starts since, he didn't look entirely comfortable racing around Chester (10.5f) on good ground but wasn't beaten far into fifth, and last time at Glorious Goodwood (10f, g-f) he was readily outpaced before going on again in the closing stages to finish 9th of the 14 runners, beaten just over 4L.

He now has the chance to race on rain-softened ground again and it will be interesting to see if he can step up on his form shown so far this season.

Redredrobin

Redredrobin probably needed her first three runs back this year following a ten-month break, but ran a lot better at Brighton (7f, g-f) two starts back in first-time cheekpieces when pulling clear with one who came good for James Owen at the fifth attempt following a stable-switch. Redredrobin's effort can probably be marked up given she disputed the lead into a headwind in a contest where the other principals got cover. The fifth has won subsequently.

The selection didn't run well last time in a 0-70 at Wolverhampton but she endured a wide trip and the jockey reported that his saddle slipped.

The majority of her wins have come on a decent surface including three times over C&D, so a marked deterioration in conditions would be a concern, however, she did win a five-runner class 4 handicap at Epsom on soft ground back in 2023 when rated 15lb higher, so does handle an ease.

A speculative pick on Wild Bessie, who faces a tough task on official ratings in this Group 3 contest. She's of a little interest based on her reappearance C&D win on soft-heavy ground back in the spring when she defeated a 92-rated Ballydoyle filly, who had the benefit of a reappearance run behind her, and who subsequently comfortably won a Limerick maiden, before going on to finish runner-up in a Group 3 at Leopardstown, which has seen her rating rise to 102. The third also subsequently won a Limerick maiden, and then finished runner-up in a handicap at the Galway festival, taking his official rating to 85.

The selection's effort in victory can probably be marked up given she had contested the pace into a headwind. She hasn't been up to Group 3 / Listed company in two starts since at the Curragh / Killarney over a mile, but each time on good ground, and interesting to see how she fares here on ground currently described as yielding, yielding to soft in places.

Danger Alert posted a couple of decent efforts in defeat last autumn over 5f / 5.5f  on soft / heavy to make the frame off higher marks at Sandown & Bath, and is of interest now the ground has turned soft again. He has only managed the two starts so far this year, both on good to firm, and now returns from over three months off, on his first start for Adam Kirby, so fitness has to be taken on trust.

He can be sluggish from the stalls, but hopefully the first-time eyeshield can have a positive effect in that regard.

A couple of selections with potentially soft ground angles but not sure the ground was ideal for either as it turned out.

The 7f G3 f & m contest at Cork was run in a time just 0.37 outside the RP standard, and judging by the way they were finishing off, the surface looked pretty decent.

The times at Yarmouth on the straight course were on the slow side despite the going being changed back to good to soft and there reportedly being a slight tailwind. Nothing explosive from Danger Alert on his debut for Adam Kirby, never able to emerge from  mid-div. The run might have been needed, however, and perhaps he'll be seen to better effect if getting the chance to race on some proper soft ground.

Crystal Pier

Crystal Pier made a good start to her season in May when winning at Wolverhampton (8.5f), and then what looked a good effort in defeat at Windsor (one mile, g-f) when going down by a head to one who has placed twice in Listed company since and is now officially rated 21lb higher.

In contrast, the selection has seemingly been disappointing in two starts since, but doubt she gave her true running next time on the July course, and last time back at Windsor when tried again over 10f, she was frotunate not to have been brought down in an incident that saw William Buick pick up an 8-day ban.

Crystal Pier has been given six weeks off since so fitness has to be taken on trust, particularly as she's easy to back this morning for a yard whose runners tend not to be missed in the betting, but hopefully she still has some upside and her pedigree would suggest that longer trips could potentially eke out some further improvement, granted she's fine with a bit of ease in the ground.

Tiberio Force's form figures this season don't inspire much confidence but not sure races have panned out well for him on occasions, and he might have needed a couple of runs back anyway following a two month break. He won this race last year on good ground and it wouldn't surprise to see him more competitive back into 0-50 classified company.

[b]Sunday Sovereign

Sunday Sovereign was a selection on his reappearance back in early-june at Fairyhouse when I wrote:

Sovereign Sovereign, a formerly useful sort, returns aged 9 with a mark that has just about bottomed out, and he probably doesn't want the ground to dry out too much back at 6f, however, there were some fair efforts in defeat last season, including on his reappearance when a finishing a close third of 14 at Roscommon (7.5f, y) off an 8lb higher mark, and back over that C/D in October on soft ground under 10lb claimer Zoe McMullan (who rides this evening), when finishing third of 15 having been on a contested pace in a race that set up for a bang-in-form mare to sweep through from off the pace.

It all sounds like that Roscommon on easy ground over 7.5f is what he ideally wants nowadays, but given he ran well fresh on his reappearance last season I'm going to take a chance here at the odds with 5 places on offer.

=====================================

Sunday Sovereign offered little then under conditions that were likley quick enough anyway. He's back from another break this evening and I have to hope that there is enough ease in the ground for him (ground currently being described yielding, good to yielding), but a chance is taken at the odds now back over this C&D.

Cheers all.

The time of the first at Roscommon didn't suggest much give in the ground, but Sunday Sovereign (40-1 ISP) still ran well to not be beaten far into 4th.

Crystal Pier, for whom the market vibes weren't great, ran poorly, even allowing for being held up in race where the winner was allowed to dictate a steady pace. I'd be surprised if it was stamina that beat her, so perhaps a combination of needing the run after a short break and not acting on the slower surface was to blame.

Treasured Royal

It seemed Treasured Royal wouldn't be long in winning when finishing third in a 3YO premier handicap at Naas (5f, good) back in the spring, particlarly as on that card it appeared that racing close to the far rail was an advantage but she had raced away from it. The form worked out fairly well with the winner subsequently running well to finish 4th of 22 in a valuable class 2 handicap at York, the runner-up finishing a close 3rd in a Naas Group 3 on his next start (for which he was put up 13lb in the ratings, and the fifth home was Midnight Dusk, now rated 10lb higher after bolting up in a Curragh handicap.

For whatever reason Treasured Royal hasn't really gone on since, running just okay in five subsequent handicaps, and then finished down the field last time at the Curragh when returning from a break and probably not well drawn.

It takes a leap of faith to support her at this stage, but that latest run might have been needed following seven-weeks off, and she is now 12lb lower in the weights than she was for that good 3rd at Navan. The selection is 1-1 at Naas, her sole win coming in a 6f 2YO maiden fillies contest, and while it's a concern that might be her optimum trip rather than today's 5f, a chance is taken at the odds as she's looking well handicapped if being restored back to that spring form.

Lily Pearl

Lily Pearl is returning from three months off so fitness has to be taken on trust, particularly with her having been weak enough in the betting so far today. She's off interest now back on softer ground as she looked to one to keep on side when pulling away with two others on good to soft last autumn at Pontefract (6f, g-s), on what was her only encounter to date with ground with an ease in it; the third and fourth have both races this season.

The selection has only been seen twice so far this year, running okay to finish third at Carlisle (6f, good) on her reappearance in May, before finishing down the field on quick ground at Wetherby (7f) in June, where she reportedly hung badly left-handed.

The stalls are on the stands' side this evening so it remains to be seen how that pans out for her from the 8 of 10 draw, with the RP's draw analysis suggesting middle numbers may hold a slight advantage, but a chance is taken here with her being unexposed on softer ground.

vonclausewitz, well done with Annie.

As for Lily Pearl, she looked rusty here, as the market predicted (ISP 22-1), getting outpaced before keeping on once meeting the rising ground to close up into 5th place.

She might ideally want further now too, and perhaps her yard have something in mind at the Western meeting for her.

Treasured Royal continues to disappoint, for all dropping back to 5f and track position might not have been ideal.

Lola De Valence

Lola De Valence is a half-sister to the useful Back In Black (who went close in this season's Bunbury Cup, and is now rated 108 after running well in a Group 2 at Newbury),  and she appears to have plenty of ability herself judging from her win on her second start, when winning impressively at Nottingham (6f, g-f). The form of that contest might not amount to much when judged through the third and fourth, but she did readily beat a Kevin Ryan-trained debutante who had cost €290,000 as a yearling, and had been well supported in the betting.

This is a big step up in class for Lola De Valence, but interesting that she's being pitched in here by the yard that won the race last year (and also run Fillipas with Colin Keane booked), so hopefully she won't be disgraced if handling the easier ground.

Furhaan ran twice over C&D in July, making the frame on both occasions having been ridden prominently. He posted a lesser effort at Musselburgh (2m2f) last time when finishing fourth of the seven runners, beaten over 7L, but perhaps being ridden more patiently didn't suit. This is a slighter stronger race than those two previous course contests he ran in and he's 4lb out of the handicap on this occasion, but hopefully he can at least be a frame contender again if getting into a good rhythm on the front-end.

Cuban Lady

It looked a decent effort from Cuban Lady on her debut for Patrick Chammings at Brighton (g-f) recently when tried over 7f for the first time, leading inside the final furlong before being headed in the final strides and finishing runner-up, with one of today's rivals Dapper Guest behind her in third place. She's actually 2lb better off with that rival here, who carries a penalty for having won since over today's C&D, where he got the better of another of today's rivals, Silver Trumpet.

The ground is likely to be a bit easier today than it was at Brighton, but Cuban Lady has run well on good to soft, and hopefully can give another good account here if going the right way from that stable debut, which was her first start for two months.
Report GEORGE.B September 10, 2026 11:31 AM BST
Redredrobin

Redredrobin was a selection last time at Chepstow when I wrote:

=========================================================================

Redredrobin disappointed at Chepstow, but the ground was probably too soft for her and not sure being taken to race towards the far side on her own was any help. The big concern today regarding her chance is the 8.5f trip, especially on ground that may have an ease in it, but perhaps if she is to get away with the trip then it will be round here. She seems best on a decent surface but has won on soft at this venue, so today's ground should be okay for her, and Harry Vigors takes off a handy 5lb.
