I think a few are missing the point here.

Forget the drift, forget the market completely.

The point was the strength of the ride and urgency of the ride was the issue. Weak and whip not used (obviously can be reasons we are unsure of re the use of the persuader).

He was weak, and if that is all he has in full drive mode then Nico and the stable will lose more close finishes than he wins.

I've just watched the race again and when you combine arrogance, with being weak in the finish, coming up against one of the top jockeys riding today in England then this is what happens.
Why didn't he push it on in the straight , gain a 5/10L lead and then ease down? He then bungled the last and didn't have the skill/strength to get past Cobden.
At the elite level as no.1 jockey for a major stable he is by far the worst I've ever seen.
Report HoratioNelson December 22, 2025 3:03 PM GMT

I wonder sometimes why I bother to look on here for anything remotely sensible in terms of racing. Not surprised the usual suspects quickly forgot the ride Nico gave Impose Toi, he made it look easy didn't he? Anybody with half a clue would acknowledge that it was far from a simple task despite appearances.

At Huntingdon he was perhaps overconfident and the final flight mistake was his undoing but whether he would have prevailed by whipping his mount is debatable, lost by inches to a horse receiving 7lbs and dropped in class who's next target is black type. I get the howls of less effort than seemed warranted but any how; of pulling the mare is ludicrous unless it was the most sublime jockeyship seen in a non trier?

As for comparing him and Cobden based on the result, again ludicrous without even considering that the winning mare is probably better than many thought and the runner up perhaps not so much superior?

Btw honcho, how does it in any way compare with Ballinger?
Report Cider December 23, 2025 8:25 PM GMT
A good ride doesn't counterbalance subsequent poor ones. Does it? Anyone with half a clue would realise that. There has never been a jockey that hasn't c0cked it up at some point.

Cobden is a superior jockey, no shame in that. It was Nico's misfortune that he was up against Cobden in that scenario.

However, the connections won't be that bothered I suspect, just those that rode in on the Hendo good thing at odds on that would be most bothered.
Report CagliariG December 23, 2025 8:36 PM GMT
That would be an answer with just half a clue then Cider, a bit like you telling us that Wham were buying money at 1/3 and some bent bloke winning the dancing? lol

JP drifting Shorties in ordinary races = Buyers Beware.

I have never avoided backing Nico in a big race,Glen.
You have lunatics like Newmarket Spurs and nonentities like Aceform who would struggle to read "Janet & John" let alone a race talking abject nonsense."Stonehands"for God's sake.
I grant you that he is not the most stylish rider but he is very effective.
The day Hendo thinks otherwise he will be gone
Report CagliariG December 23, 2025 8:58 PM GMT
That is a tad contradictory don't you think Cider? You wanted to get on at 1/3 but then wanted to lay it? Is there an angle we are missing?

Btw perhaps the layers thought you were so clued up that you knew best?
Report Cider December 23, 2025 9:02 PM GMT
Circumstances changed quickly. There's a thread on the specials forum with my commentary 'live', outlining why things changed. Kylie certainly won me more money than Wham would have, and she has kept the market interesting going forward.

You know the score irons, whenever we get a Nico thread the horses never get a mention which tell us the likes of Newmarket and his cronies are simply groupies for when it goes wrong, which it does regularly for most jockeys.
