I work for a film production company (Western Edge Pictures) currently working on a documentary about the life and career of the former jockey Declan Murphy.
Perhaps the most significant moment of his career was his return to horse racing following his life threatening injury. Not only did he race again, but he won his first race back at Chepstow.
Unfortunately the full footage of this race seems to be lost, but I was wondering if anyone here still had a copy?
Here are the race details:
Chepstow 3:15 on 10 October 1995 Annual Flat V Jump Jockeys Challenge Handicap Glass G The winning horse was Jibereen and Declan Murphy was the jockey.
Alternatively, if you know any reporters, etc, who are at the race - or if you were at the race - it would be brilliant to get in touch.
This would be of huge help in properly sharing Declan's story.
Please let us know if we can help provide further details. We would greatly appreciate your help!
The only surprise about the comeback winning ride would have been if it had not won.
The race in question at Chepstow was discussed on this forum at the time. Over 23 years ago the post still remains on here.
The race was a charity race and there was a ballot to see what jockey rode what horse but it transpired that Declan Murphy had ridden work on the winner Jibereen a few days before.
The jockey club looked into betting patterns and as to whether other jockeys were in collusion with one another but decided an official inquiry was not needed.
I would have thought Barney Curley would have known about the race as he and Murphy were very close.
Well known Brighton gambler who is now warned off told loads in the city at the time the likely outcome
Declan Murphy had a flat in the Brighton Marina complex and saw him there a few times and thinks he lives in Spain now.
As ronnie has mentioned bookmaker Steve Little got a caning

Thanks both, that's really helpful. Do you know where I can find the original discussion about the race? We're really trying to find footage of the race.

Thank you Glasgowcalling and Duffy, that's great. Saddo, it would be great to hear any account of the race or of anyone who could share their experience of it.

Cant add much in terms of Declan himself but his brother Eamom tried to make hay after his comeback. Selling tips on course for selected clients.
Totally fuc..d when asked his opinion of the nearside rail advantage at Yarmouth, dressed in a blue linen suit with white loafers, worse than Greville's safari suit.
