Might be different in Ireland but in GB there has been a big shift from online back to on course betting according to bookies. Largely driven by affordability checks. It can only be the big hitters as a day racing costs £40 before you start betting. And typical SPs are at least 10% below exchange win odds.

Glasgow

This is from September 28th 1996 Frankie day

17500/10000 14000/8000 6 times then plenty of 4000 and 2000 bets at 7/4 13000/8000

Did well to return 2/1

irons..

if ewe bet genuine value over time ewe win
if you lay bad value over time ewe win.

if iyo 1/7 isnt 'value' then it mussed be bad value shirley?
Report uptheirons November 27, 2025 1:30 PM GMT
As I haven't seen it School how would I know what was value?
Incidentally, five years ago this type of horse would have been 1/3,now any price that gets put up is taken.
1.03 a JP horse pre off todayLaugh
Report Whippin Piccadilly November 27, 2025 1:43 PM GMT
Irons has the game by the provibal's, Rico. So if you'd had seen it school really well at home and it was still 1/7 on it's chase debut would this then be a value price?
Report HoratioNelson November 27, 2025 1:45 PM GMT
That's it jim....used to love going through those
Report uptheirons November 27, 2025 1:54 PM GMT
The winner was a 140 Hurdler making its Chase debut so hardly a mug so the answer would have been no,mr smarty,WP.
Report jimnast November 27, 2025 1:58 PM GMT
Horatio out at the minute but later will post the overounds that day there quite interesting.
Report HoratioNelson November 27, 2025 1:58 PM GMT
I bet they are jim....thank you
Report Whippin Piccadilly November 27, 2025 2:01 PM GMT
And you didn't consider the winner to be a value price to back then?
Report uptheirons November 27, 2025 2:05 PM GMT
I would not back a Chase debutant at 1/7 under any circumstances,WP.
It is as simple as that and,as I pointed out earlier.that doesn't make me a Layer.
There are plenty of races I am happy to swerve
Report Rico-Dangleflaps November 27, 2025 2:06 PM GMT
its simple enuff...if its bar a fall 1/7 to jump 10 fences and not to go lame is preceived as value then lump on.
Report uptheirons November 27, 2025 2:09 PM GMT
It clearly wasn't bar a fall as you put it,Rico, was it.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps November 27, 2025 2:14 PM GMT
fck nahs..never looked at race and didnt see it..im just meaning in general.
Report Whippin Piccadilly November 27, 2025 2:15 PM GMT
Fair enough Irons, just interested in your pre race methods in this type of race
Report jimnast November 27, 2025 2:47 PM GMT
Overounds Horatio that day

Race one 7 runners 108.8
Race two 12 runners 118.8
Race three 7 runners 111.91
Race four 26 runners 138.48
Race five 18 runners 133.39
Race six 5 runners 110.48
Race seven 18 runners 150.45

It was by race 5 the dettori situation kicked in the only one of his rides I backed that day was fatefully at 7/1 in the morning pretty sure it would still be around that price as race 4 was been run then returned 7/4
Report HoratioNelson November 27, 2025 3:12 PM GMT
Thank you jim...Unreal figures.

The owner of my Dads local won approx £150k in a Frankie acca on the day.....unfortunately he drank himself to death within 2 years Sad

It was a great day horatio even on the Sunday there was a real buzz around the racecourse he rode one called sunbeam dance in the first it seemed almost everyone on course was hoping it would win,

I remember on the Saturday I had no interest in the last two races and was going to leave early but because of what was happening I stayed thankfully

There’s another comedian on sky sports racing now Sean boyce talking about the fighting fifth he can’t wait to see the race and just hopes the big three get there ,how disrespectful to the current champion hurdler however there every chance he isn’t aware of that fact so maybe he isn’t been disrespectful.

Report Cider November 27, 2025 4:37 PM GMT
In a 100% book, 12.5% of 1/7 shots are expected to lose. It's quite amusing really that when it happens, people act as if the sky has just fallen in.
Report Cider November 27, 2025 4:41 PM GMT
There's little long term value in participating at those odds, unless you are in possession of knowledge that the market doesn't have. As you can't really afford to miss, or else you need an awful lot of winners to edge in front. Not worth it.  Even then, there is still implied risk. In some markets I can bet at 1/7, safe in the knowledge that the true odds are more like 1/999 (pretty much not measurable in reality).

I think I was betting Labour maj in the last GE around that price, yes the true chance of losing was not measurable. Though in that case the issue was deposit limits, not getting on!
