Beaten 3 lengths by stateman in the county hurdle receiving only 1 lb
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 2:53 PM GMT
Can’t remember many times seeing horses of that ability finishing so slowly.
Report wondersobright November 17, 2025 2:59 PM GMT
heavy & worn ground normal

rince ri 2nd ericsson chase hard to match on that score
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:01 PM GMT
Great call wondersobright I remember him there were a few very slow chasers around then who ran in gold cups.
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:03 PM GMT
Mind you he beat a real good one that day.
Report wondersobright November 17, 2025 3:03 PM GMT

Report MeTooDooblyDoo November 17, 2025 3:08 PM GMT
Colonel always looked golden and yellow and hungry, but he was somewhat intelligent in teeth and beautiful in soul.
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:10 PM GMT
Here are some of the equally slow chaser around that time that over achieved for the pace they had.
Truckers tavern
Lord noelie
Hussard collonges
Harbour pilot
Commanche court

And the daddy of them all sir Rembrandt
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:11 PM GMT
Ramptan has let them out early today
Report duffy November 17, 2025 3:13 PM GMT
Commanche Court won a Triumph
Report wondersobright November 17, 2025 3:14 PM GMT

tiger roll before tiger roll except CC wasn't a little rat Grin
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:18 PM GMT
He did Duffy but I just think at the time around best mate was winning his gold cups the group of staying chasers were basically plodders but between them achieved plenty
Report duffy November 17, 2025 3:19 PM GMT
Just slow...I mean Just SoGrin
Report sageform November 17, 2025 3:24 PM GMT
About to find out if Kopek Des Bordes can jump.
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 3:24 PM GMT
Yes just so against sir Rembrandt would have been some race.

Duffy just looked back at commanche court’s triumph win ,I would say possibly the worse triumph ever only shooting light when pipe got him and sent him chasing ever achieved anything worthwhile
Report sageform November 17, 2025 3:33 PM GMT
Earth Summit another really slow horse. Hence his GN winning time.
Report duffy November 17, 2025 3:47 PM GMT
Martin Pipe and RSA winner "I PlOD ON" Grin
Report Cider November 17, 2025 3:49 PM GMT
Certainly recency bias, but Mr Vango is up there for the slowest useful horse I have seen over the jumps.
Report Cider November 17, 2025 3:51 PM GMT
Would have been fun over the old GN conditions.
Report Cider November 17, 2025 3:52 PM GMT
Party Politics another useful big boat.
Report LoyalHoncho November 17, 2025 4:22 PM GMT
Sir Rembrandt nearly caught Best Mate, who I loved having followed him from a 5yo.  Then along came Kauto and Denman to show us how lucky he had been to face such modest opposition.  Still a great training effort though.
Report Cider November 17, 2025 4:25 PM GMT
Best Mate remains the slickest jumper I have ever seen. Never exuberant, just efficient. Somehow he had a technique that I've never seen another horse replicate. Only Bino over hurdles came close, for me.
Report LoyalHoncho November 17, 2025 4:28 PM GMT
I agree 100%.  I have said so on here before and been rocketed.  I only ever saw him make one mistake and it was in the KG with AP on board.  And it was a slight one which he overcame no bother.
Report Busyfool November 17, 2025 4:35 PM GMT
Didnt Hen sack him after that or did I imagine it?

Best mate the last auntie post winner I had, the 1st time
Report LoyalHoncho November 17, 2025 4:37 PM GMT
Don’t think so.  He only rode it that day as Culloty was unavailable.
Report duffy November 17, 2025 4:38 PM GMT
One of the ploddiest of races and finish in relation to the stature of the race and one I always put up for top jockey performance to get the horse home was Dickie Johnson's effort in getting Flaship Uberalles over the line in the Champion Chase, the horse hated every second of it that day and it certainly didn't look much like the finish of a Queen Mum.
Report penzance November 17, 2025 4:39 PM GMT
Culloty was banned for that race.
Report Eddie Batt November 17, 2025 6:56 PM GMT
Duffy -Good call with Flagship Uberalles-it was like the finish of a Welsh National.
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 7:11 PM GMT
How many Ryanair’s would the 2nd horse that day have won if the race was around then ?
Report duffy November 17, 2025 7:13 PM GMT
Nativeupmanship was another who could have done with a Ryanair in his day too as too would Strong Promise.
Report Eddie Batt November 17, 2025 7:25 PM GMT
Time For Rupert trained by Paul Eebber got slower with every run.
Report jimnast November 17, 2025 7:31 PM GMT
That’s the horse I’m referring to Duffy he was 2nd behind flagship
Report duffy November 17, 2025 7:58 PM GMT
Yes of course sorry,I've watcched it over and over again and still forgot about him running on past Cenkos Grin
