Salmon...I am going. 99% sure it will be on.

Despite a few hours of heavy rain, the waster table is a long way below ground level so the rain is soaking through.

Also, the river which can flood the track (River Greet) is as long, long way beneath danger levels - although it is rising.

I will be astonished if Southwell is off today.

I hope you're right The Knight, and I know your local knowledge is very good. I've just rung the hotel I was staying at to say I'm not coming.
I know Southwell has plenty of indoor space but I like to hobble from the paddock,to the bookies and into the stand and at my time of life that's probably not a good idea in the conditions.

I get that, Salmon.

As you will have seen, racing was on but it was a pretty miserable afternoon. Perhaps not as bad as forecast but still wet and cold.

Also, I love all the tracks I go to but perhaps I do not love the jumps at Southwell quite as much!

The AW is brilliant for me but the NH game always seems rather bland there. It is a very flat track and the races are always run with little pace variation which makes a lot of them seem dull. Also, tut the trees on the golf course in the track centre do really obscure the view of two or three of the back straight fences. And, to cap it all, the NH racing there is very often pretty low grade.

(Apparently, though, the track and the golf club are always arguing about who should cut down the tree foilage a bit!! So, you missed very little yesterday!!!)

I think I made the right decision tbh.
I first went to Southwell in c1982 well before the a/w track appeared. Also before the modern facilities were built.Seemed to me a very pleasant rustic track but I am a jumps fan and was MUCH younger of course so conditions weren't that much of a consideration. The racing has always been low-grade but my memory is of a horse called Imperial Black winning a very poor novices handicap chase at 20-1 ( or thereabouts).
He later went to Neville Crump and became quite a useful handicapper running at least once in The Grand National. I saw him in the paddock and he was huge, but unfortunately that didn't lead me to back him.

You were much younger in 1982?

Thanks for the clarification
