'It's been a lucky meeting for us' - The Yellow Clay and Western Fold set to spearhead Gordon Elliott's Down Royal team Gordon Elliott: trainer of Three Card Brag Gordon Elliott: "We've got a few nice horses running"Credit: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) Gordon Elliott has long used Down Royal as an opportunity to showcase his strength and he sends a powerful team to this week's two-day fixture starting on Friday fresh from an unprecedented five-timer in the US. While admitting his squad may not be as strong as in previous years, the trainer is still preparing to unleash some of his leading lights, including Grade 1 winner The Yellow Clay and Galway Plate hero Western Fold. Read: Gordon Elliott Stable Tour “It's been a lucky meeting for us and we've got a few nice horses running,” Elliott said. “We’re a little bit behind with the winter horses and we’re probably not as strong this year as we have been in previous years, but it's a long season and we're looking forward to getting it started." The Yellow Clay will make his reappearance against stablemate Casheldale Lad in the Listed Bottlegreen Hurdle (2.37) on Friday, while Arkle 16-1 chance Romeo Coolio will jump a fence in public for the first time in the 2m4f beginners' chase (3.47). “On ratings, Casheldale Lad and The Yellow Clay look ahead of the rest in their race," said Elliott. "It's a nice opportunity to start them off. I could see The Yellow Clay probably stepping up in trip as the season goes on. “Romeo Coolio schooled very well on Wednesday. Jack [Kennedy] rode him and he jumped very well. I think anything from two miles to two and a half miles will suit him, so the trip shouldn’t be a problem. We have no concrete plan made for afterwards." The Yellow Clay: winner of the Lawlor's of Naas Novice Hurdle The Yellow Clay: reappears at Down Royal on FridayCredit: Patrick McCann (racingpost.com/photos) Elliott could have up to five runners in the Grade 1 BetVictor Champion Chase (2.40) on Saturday, but the make-up of his team will depend on the accuracy of the rain forecast at Down Royal over the next few days. His possible runners include Galway Plate winner Western Fold , last season's Brown Advisory Novices' Chase second Stellar Story, along with the Bective Stud pair of Found A Fifty and Better Days Ahead . “We'll have to wait and see how the ground goes in the next few days,” he said. “If it keeps raining, it will suit Stellar Story and those types of horses, and probably puts Western Fold and them out.” Firefox , who won at the meeting last year but was unable to add to that during the season, could appear alongside Grade 1-winning novice chaser Croke Park in the Grade 2 Kildress Plumbing Chase (3.15). “Firefox worked well this morning and he could run in the second-season novice race on Saturday," said Elliott. "Croke Park could run in that race, too, and he has a run under his belt. We're probably going to have two runners in each race.” The ground on Thursday was good to yielding on the hurdles course and good, good to yielding in places on the chase track with the possibility of 16mm of rain on Thursday and a further 5mm on Friday. |
