It's a progressive handicapper, but that's likely his level. It wasn't a strong race he won at the Festival, and it's hard to get carried away with giving 2lbs to a 13yo in the Irish National. You usually need a little bit of pace to win a Gold Cup, not so sure he has that. I think they will be pleased to win another decent staying handicap.

Yeah Dd, was thinking along same lines
It’s ground dependent too, and it wants extreme Distances, both poor races it won, it’s jumping Is the main reason it’s competitive in races, as it Jumps brilliantly. 152 hé will struggle, gold cup winner 176/178, this needs to find 2 stone. Putting this up For a gold cup is clueless tipping ?? |

Not a bad start, over timber, off 145

gold cup winners have float up campaigns, not knocked out early in nov for a fkin hcap hurdle

told you nothing today except its had a pretty hard race imo

Synchronised started off over hurdles the season he won it.

It all depends on the price ...

Would there be such a fuss if Segal hadn't put it up, and some have ignored his awful Festival record, and followed him in?

It's a big price now

It was disappointing. He never ran his race.

Looked to me that Bowen fell asleep at the start, after which there was one chance to go forward, but the jock didn't take it, and he soon dropped away. It still remains likely he isn't good enough, and his price now reflects that, rather than the Segal price.

The race at Newbury scuppered any chance he had of winning

That was the trainer's excuse. Who knows how valid it is?

World War three to win a 3M Hurdle was hardly an easy for Haydock

Sean Bowen had been strangling Haiti C for two minutes at the start when the flag dropped. No wonder it resented its jockey crunching it through the gears from the start. That would have been trainer error as much as jockey error imo.

Well others can verify but I would be surprised if HC wasn’t 10 in running after a furlong.

Or maybe the handicapper, Haiti Couleurs, was out of his depth?

Maybe I've missed something obvious in the news but after Haiti Couleurs' pipe opener over hurdles
a few weeks ago, I just assumed that connections were protecting his handicap mark for a tilt at the old Hennessey (as it seemed the perfect race for such a progressive chaser) so it was a surprise to see him thrown into the deep end at Haydock. That said...for such a prestigious races, the Haydock race was weakly contested compared to previous renewals so I can understand why connections were tempted, but that roll of the dice has backfired. There have been many similar types of unconsidered staying chasers who've reached the frame and gone close in a Gold Cup (and some have even won) having previously been perceived as outclassed so I definitely wouldn't be so dismissive of a terrific fencer who's got obvious improvement in him - time will tell, though his upward trajectory has been derailed for the time being. PS - if memory serves Burrough Hill Lad opened one season in a Warwick H'Cap Hurdle when already a Gold Cup winner (I think) - it might've been his prep for the Hennessey. |
