..given recent soundings from Billy's, Paddy and in particular Baldfred's statement that he'd potentially close the whole estate if Rachel Thieves hikes up the tax to help pay for a lift on the 2nd child family allowance cap.
I presume they are considering taking over existing bookies shops who are set to shut? Not set up in competition in areas where already not enough business for one shop? Most shop punters, in my experience, would just easily switch from one bookie to another, not much brand loyalty, if given no choice.

Taking over where retail, banks and all sorts by the look of things. Could well jump in the graves of other Bookies should they pack it in. The CCO is Australian by the sound of him. Seems to adopt the idea that he will target areas up north where they enjoy their horseracing and the southerners who are more footie orientated and then pitch the offer accordingly. I'm not convinced he will find staff who give enough of a toss about either discipline to whip up a loyal patronage Betting shops have only survived because of the machines they wheeled in to attract the spin addicts. Is he being up front with the selective pitching or does he want the mugs sitting there perched on stools doing their conkerz on the reels, just like the others who are threatening to leave the scene of their crimes..

and you can't tell me the shops you mention are doing well enough on anything other than the machines. Councils caving in to applications just to fill empty holes on the high street. Licenses were quite heavily restricted back in the day. now we have a scenario such as the one above, whereby there are three of the bandits in a row. madness.

Many years ago now I was in a local pub reading the Racing Post and was approached by a guy who asked me if I liked a bet as he was working for 'Freds 'and they were seeking to opening a betting shop on a road where there were already 3 other firms operating.
This was in the day before exchanges or phone betting apps.
The first application had been refused as Laddies had objected on the grounds there were ample betting shops in the area.
At the time one had to go to court to try and convince the judge there was a need to open a betting shop. It was explained that all the groundwork had been done including how many steps it would take from the existing betting shops to the proposed new shop and the benefits the new shop would bring including offers and bonuses that the current shops did not offer.
I was told if I was prepared to be a witness to support the new shop I would be rewarded for the time and effort after the hearing but that I would be questioned in the court if I was doing it just for money I was to answer that no payment has been made and I was doing it as I thought the more competition there was would be better for customers.
On the day of the appeal I was introduced to Freds team they included a regional manager and a QC (at the time) who apparently undertook work for the government.
The appeal was scheduled to take 2 days and included Laddies QC estimating how far it would be for a disabled man to walk to the proposed new shop as they would not bother to use the new shop.
I was called as a witness to support the new shop and was asked how many times I used the larry shop or hilly shop also in same road.I replied live in the area and bet daily so be difficult calculate.
When questions as to was I was doing it for money I replied I had not received a penny and there was no agreement as to any reward should the appeal be granted or not.
The QCs spent time arguing how big the shops were and how many more customers could be in the current shops without being over crowded.
After two days in the County Court the judge decided that Freds appeal should be granted and the shop is still trading today.
Once the licence was granted for the new shop I was contacted again asking me if I knew any staff from other shops would consider applying to work at the fred shop and the manager from larry shop become a manager of the new shop and is still working for the firm today.
That was the way it was in the old days!

Great post. You hear and read and are constantly told in the media of surveys and polls etc having indicated such and such, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, etc, and of huge public consultation etc; yet in fifty odd years I’ve never been approached about whether I watched anything on the telly or had views about anything. So much so that you feel most polls are just figments of media devices. Your involvement here is of interest in that respect alone - that a real person has been involved in such campaigns etc, at least once - and reveals how shrewd their operation has been over the years. They might have bought you a pie and a pint though!
