What makes you say that? If it is dodgy starts, fences omitted due to the sun or last minute abandonments then I agree but if you didn't enjoy Ascot you are watching the wrong sport.
Report LoyalHoncho October 18, 2025 8:12 PM BST
I agree with elisjohn.  Bit by bit its TV broadcasting quality frays and its gambling appeal does likewise.  Then there is the dire leadership of the BHA.  Once  King Charles goes it will lose the rock of Royal assent - William doesn’t seem even remotely interested.  And the antis will take advantage as they see weakness.  I am not optimistic about the future at all.

A lot is self-inflicted, sometimes over years. The increasing cost of Cheltenham, especially for Irish visitors.

No public jockey now Frankie has semi-retired. The best replacement might have been Bryony Frost. She won Graded races at the biggest meetings; the camera loved her; she loved the microphone. But then Robbie Dunne happened and instead of supporting her or at least acting quickly to shut the whole thing down, racing shuffled in embarrassment and she was put on a Eurostar to France.

Who else is there? Ryan Moore is too private. Rachel Blackmore had her moment in the sun but is based in Ireland and retired now anyway. Hollie Doyle looked promising for a while but needs a top retainer so she gets rides at the big meetings.
Report Ramruma October 19, 2025 10:07 AM BST
Racing is far to pally with bookies. Instead of being a sport on which people happen to bet, racing has turned itself into a "product" for the betting shop chains.

Football betting has exploded in recent years but you don't see the FA tweaking its rulebook because Corals thinks too many punters are backing 2-1 scorelines.

What is worse is racing's love for the betting shop chains is unrequited. The corporates have long seen racing as a mere gateway to lure in punters then convert them to FOBTs or numbers games.

I can only speak for myself, but I have found myself trying to be more and more selective. We all know the fixture list is ridiculous, but it's not going to change. The industry loves to see you losing money, and that's if you can even get on, at whatever level. Assuming you are not trying to make a living - and that's most punters it shouldn't be that difficult to ignore the day to day rubbish, and even the weekends if they don't offer anything much better.

As for the Flat season it revolves around the very rich paying a lot for horses that for the most part turn out to be not very much at all. In short it's just continual hype. How many threads do we get on here saying 'have we just seen....'? The answer to all of them is 'no we haven't'. Then you have the biggest barrier to winning, the weighing room, you cannot trust any of them for any length of time.

All this against the background of constant bumming up of the product. We even had Luck this morning trying to somehow justify the 200/1 winner. Just be honest for once, the sprint division is rubbish - like several other divisions - and they just take a turn, which even opens the door for the likes of yesterday's winner.

Horse racing punters should have ever had it so good with more coverage and exposure than ever by a country mile , just evolve with the sport and adapt to the changing demands , no use harping back the the allegedly good old eighties with rose coloured spectacles as they're dead and buried.

Adapt and embrace the different opportunities.

No offence ponch just offering an opinion of something that works for me , spend as little time as possible selecting when race presents itself with an opportunity and as stated many times on here i'm systematic so horses select themselves and tbh they're just names and numbers to me.

As for time involved in the game obviously a lifetime as a punter but 30yrs the other side of the counter so to speak at a senior level so you do see facts and a customer base that makes you understand how wading through form books and punting race to race with just a personal opinion doesn't cut it for 98% of punters.

Each to their own , good luck tomorrow    Happy

Sorry meaning to add Ponch the " laughable " SP comment was in the context of getting bets on and and remaining under the radar longer not necessarily for a bigger return , that said i do think punters tale a price far too frequently far too early with bigger early over rounds if playing the books.

elisjohn, the ability of one yard to effectively clean up the 6 prizes on offer in a Group 1 is the real problem that racing faces. I will not be having a bet in the Doncaster 2.05. Ascot was not dominated by anyone although the three leaders in the GB title race did train one winner each. William Haggas is fifth and he had one winner while Fahey and Hills who have had rather poor seasons by their standards produced the long priced ones. Were the odds a reflection of their quiet seasons rather than a reflection of the horse's chances? The biggest prize went to Francis Graffard, undoubtedly the trainer of the year in Europe.

Had a good look at this last last night, trying to get a feel for race, I’m all over hawk mountain at 8s
I think he will be their main runner ?

Both thé fav and Item look like big long striding good ground horses
If the rains come, it comes up heavy, not sure either with run on heavy ?

Cant see Gosden running oxagon either, in heavy ground

The Fsvs form is also inferior to hawk mountain, thé 3 hé beat at Leopards
Are not as good as the horses hawk mountain beat, a mile in heavy is
More suitable to hawk, than thé fav??

At the curragh hé was pricking his last 3 furlongs, idling in front, even after
The ears were pricked, lots more in locker ??

Cant have any of his others, and they’l run a pacemaker for their main runner
Best 8/1 shot to look through a bridle ?? Could end up with 4 or 5 runners??

That’s the pre race read, could be totally wrong lol

Early declaring in these type of races, scares most off, if they declare both
Hawk and Cellini, and a pace maker, it might make up
Gosdens and Baldings mind not to bother. The race will
Also suit thé Beckett horse, but he had a tough race in France

Might end up with just Irish trained runners, the other Irish horse
Will probably stay in for the place money. Interesting race ??

"No one forces you to bet"

True in a way. However, the bookies' intentions are clear. They are not interested in horseracing. They want to suck every punter into fobt eg offering free bets on sign-ups; freebies on fobt; price boost promotions; GambleAware ads (subliminal but intentional) esp at night.

The very selective horseracing punter gets restricted too bet wise eg 250p max, or 100p max on price boost on horses and footie.

The game is not dead? Only a bookie would say that. Every horseracing betting avenue remaining is being closed - this is the reality for most.

How can you to so precise with dec, 'poncho'? Are you hooked up to some privileged website? If so, 'poncho' you must be a serious punter.

I've learnt from my past mistakes (foolishness) with AOB multi-entries and switcheroos. The bloke is a master of trickery; he was irked (euphemism for furious) about Gosden senior snubbing The Curragh clash with Delacroix.

Very few bets, but still enjoy doing races well in advance
Then trying to get opening prices, which are generally way out
Of line. There’s a new generation of trader/odds compilers, young

Systems to get them out of jail. Hence 50s and 1ers now

This is my bet race today, csnt back fav, missed the 8s hawk
Mountain, oxagon has more boot than the other 3, but
With most likely get outstayed at Donny over a mile in heavy?

Looks like from watching Donny yesterday, there won’t be a
Fresh strip of ground, so yesterday’s runners will have opened it.

I can see why it’s 2nd on the card, if they ran as main event late on
Be ploughed up.

I backed action at 8s after decs. Looked at all his 3 runs, kept changing
His legs at Galway, still won, green at Newmarket, didn’t handle dip didn’t
Like thé firm either, yet still kept at it. Lovely big horse, heavy ground s8 mile
And Donny will suit. Thought 8 was value ?? Minimum bet
Report impossible123 October 25, 2025 9:42 AM BST
14:05 at Donny is tricky; 3 principals from the same trainer with a propensity to hookwink punters. The shortie fav was only confirmed 2 days prior after a betting walkabout out; Hawk Mountain is not ridden by Lordan (Action) either (I do not buy what AOB said), and a drifter.

The Futurity is a non-event this year, personally.
