Yes, it's a big miss, it was about the racing, I can't stand any of the channels today, whether they're aiming the programme at a younger audience who aren't very interested in the actual racing like ITV, or boring us to death with endless stats on the specialist channels. Thank God for the live video.

I'm confident the BBC don't miss the racing

You can look back with nostalgia but media coverage of Horse Racing has moved on. I have early memories of Pas Seul winning the Gold Cup in grainy black and white. Now even Cornelius has been dropped and the BBC are firmly in the woke camp when it comes to riding horses never mind racing them. It is also about money of course although I doubt if ITV pay very much for covering racing these days.
It is not just the BBC. I buy the Daily Telegraph (Saturday only) when they produce a separate sport supplement and for 60 years their coverage of racing from Lord Oaksey and then Marcus Armytage was top class. Now you get 2 racecards and tips for the other meetings on 1/3 of a page on a Saturday! Yesterday that followed 3 pages on Ricky Hatton (from a sport which glorifies violence and serious brain injuries to humans), 2 pages on Andy Farrell, 3 pages on football despite there being no significant games yesterday. Public interest in racing is dropping fast and well done to Sky and ITV for continuing to cover the big meetings.

No, the coverage of modern day terrestial racing is far superior to yester year imop,it does have to strike a balance between casual viewer and core racing fan. Camera angles are far better, paddock opinions pre/post race interviews are miles better, days of coverage is outstanding Perhaps the only thing i would improve on is to get a Nevison/Mellish like member on the team to try to make the moves in betting more exciting and informed like Mcririck used to instead of Chamberlin giving a quick mention before the off.
Report sageform October 12, 2025 10:30 AM BST
True Cropsick although a lot of the camera work is to please the techies on their staff rather than the viewer. Have helmet cameras added anything? I think not.

they go on about youngsters watching , and casual viewer,, well to start, youngsters are at school/ college /work when racing is on midafternoon midweek, and seriously does anyone think casual viewer/ youngster is waching on a saturday afternoon. i do know loads who go to the racing couple times a year for the booze. etc and none of those watch tv racing at all

Many of the racing presenters past and present would have made a half decent Carry On movie. Plenty of comedy gold with Francome Oaksey Carson Big Mac Olly Thommo Wiltshire along with a few straight batters Linley O'Sullevan Mcgrath.
Bit of glamour from Francesca Cumani Emma spencer and co starring the Booby.

What a carry on! Excited

I do not think getting youngsters to go racing (any type of racing) which can induce betting is a good thing for them and UK Plc; the youngsters with their electronic gadget eg mobile phone, laptop, etc, at hand will most likely to be attracted to and possibly hooked on gambling.

Gambling of any form (not even cards eg poker) except in the Grand National was not permitted in my family; talking about this activity is frowned upon, discouraged and not allowed at a dinner table.

Gambling is a pariah activity.

can you imagine Julian Wilson going up to interview Sir Michael Stoute, with khaki shorts black ankle length socks and sandals, that is what ITV have allowed Chapman and Harvey to do, it would make you vomit. cheers.
Report LoyalHoncho October 14, 2025 9:24 PM BST
You have a fertile imagination werbie.  Laugh. The quite brilliant Kenneth Connor would play a brilliantly pompous Jim McGrath whilst the equally watchable Peter Butterworth would have done Thommo to a T.  Alf Ippititimus, aka as Jack Douglas, would fit as Chamberlain with Charles Hawtrey doing a decent portrayal of hapless Luke Harvey and Jim Dale doppelgänger for Oli Bell.  Give Terry Scott the Weaver gig and we’d be making a perfect Carry On Gravytraining.

Agree with sageform "You can look back with nostalgia but media coverage of Horse Racing has moved on." Times change, and horse racing coverage has evolved.

Report differentdrum October 14, 2025 11:14 PM BST
There's a lot to not like about today's coverage, but I think some people see the old stuff through rose tinted. I think the way it was presented was better. Other than Royal Ascot it was just about the racing. Now it's a glossy magazine with an overdose of cheerleading. As for the commentating I don't think there has ever been a more accurate caller than Jerry Hannon. O'Sullevan went on much too long. Presumably, nobody had the heart to tell him he was no longer any good.

Seeing Julian Wilson there at Goodwood?, reminds me he was a snappy dresser.

Must be late 1960's, about that time during the Foot and Mouth outbreak, I remember they decamped to Saint-Cloud for a meeting or two.

I miss the professionalism and serious approach of those times. They knew how to conduct an interview, but now it seems full of buffoons.  I know of on other sport that goes down this route.  Can you imagine anyone today interviewing Princess Anne?..

Report barstool October 15, 2025 4:38 PM BST
When the BBC covered the grand national back in the 50s they Had a cameraman stood on the roof of a car filming the race from just ahead of the field.

No need for head cams back then!

Have a look at some old races on youtube. Laughed my head off watching.
