Doesn't he go overboard with his sectionals? Not saying there's no merit in them but how many punters go that deep? He's an accountant and loves playing with numbers.
Reminds me of that old Woody Allen gag ' An expert is someone who knows 101 ways to make love but doesn't know any girls.'

I think he's correct with Precis. The pacesetters went too quick; Precis went past tiring horses whic had accentuated her win and ability.

Three words that put me off when it comes to racing but I am genuinely fine how everyone individually goes about finding a winner.

1) Systems

2) Stats

3) Trends

I literally go numb when any of the above are discussed.

...to embarrass myself further I have never looked at Breeding once in my whole life prior to placing a bet....Not a single time in over 30 years.

I await a backlash from those better than me of which I do not doubt there are many.

footballs gone same way 1000,s of tweets this week about 6,8,10,s

they,d have been fooked back in the day when souness, wark, scholes, keano, etc were 6,8,10,s every week in same game and stell found time to pop  up front and bang in 15 to20 goals a  season,so today would be 6,8,9,and 10,s Laugh

I could not care less about breeding either but I am surprised how little attention that sectionals and speed maps get in UK racing
Report HoratioNelson October 11, 2025 2:53 PM BST
I am sure some use them alsdavidx but I don't think it has ever been a "big thing" here like it is is the States and Aus alike.

A pace angle is one thing but speed maps etc have never been on my radar.

Even in the UK You can take 20 horses that can run exactly the same time exactly the same ability time wise over a certain distance.

10 leaders and 10 back markers

You put those 10 leaders in a race with one of those back markers So eleven horse race. 11 horses that run exactly the same time even an average jockey the back marker will win by 5 lengths.

Then have a race with 10 back markers and one of the leaders  11 horses that run exactly the same time even an average jockey the leader will win by 5 lengths beating the all of them including the back marker it just lost to by 5 lengths  .

Sometimes races are just neutral and tempo race shape does not have much affect the above are extreme examples but Race pattern and speed maps can be so important in races 1100 m to 2000 m

because its all after timing and nothing that happens today is certain to be repeated in future, unless your clock watching and betting in running

nothing to do with been a dinosaur heard/read 2 lads on X both thought they new their stuff, one thought England played a 4 4 2 , and one thought they,d hit the sweet spot of
3  2   5, I actually couldn't work out if he meant 3 at the back or 5 at the back not that it mattered as  they played a conventional 40 yr old 4 at the back
there was a lad on boro twitter trying to find/sort boro, formation out this week ,best way forward etc,and thought he new his stuff with his tactics board and fridge magnets and people let him bang on for about a dozen tweets,he thought he was bringing people round till it waspoi Ted out he had 12 players on the pitch LaughLaugh

1tp has nailed it, hours spent analysing a completed race , filling air time, the horses rarely meet again, the track is different, the ground is different, the pace is different, their marks have changed, etc etc, do they make money from this tosh, of course not, that's why they're in a studio spouting such tosh.
Report elisjohn October 11, 2025 7:35 PM BST
terrible commentator, tries to be factual and correct about everything happens in the race, even if their tailed off , keep it si,ple concentrate on the leaders

As I said on another thread it doesn't matter how you make a profit. It's whatever suits you, there is no right or wrong way.

To the original poster, if you think Hoiles is bad, try reading Rowlands. He is off the planet. For me the most pompous writer out there as he really does seem to believe it's his way or the highway. He obviously devotes a whole lot of time to his figures. My only question would be is if he has discovered the wheel why is his interpretation so bad that he doesn't actually pick more winners?

As more and more jump on the sectional bandwagon, if there ever was an edge, it is continually diminishing.
