Just what determines the numbering of a horse on a French race-card?

I don't think it's ever been properly explained on TV and nothing seems to make sense.
WHY is Giavellotto number 1?

The ONLY plausible reason I can see for this is that he's the oldest horse...and adding heft to that theory,
following him is White Birch who as a 5yo is the second oldest colt - but then the 'system' goes awry.

I think there might well be something in that possibility as the mare Quisisana (5yo) is higher up than
the year-younger Kalpana (4yo) which doesn't make sense alphabetically.

I'm flummoxed as to why Sosie is above Los Angeles in race-card order - they're both 4yo colts and alphabetically
the latter should be higher up the card...and just in case it was prioritised by precise age (cos the Frogs are crazy)
Los Angeles was foaled before Sosie!

Furthermore, I don't understand why Byzantine Dream isn't above Los Angeles - I just cannot see any reason for this
except that he's 'foreign' which I'd assume is very unlikely.
I even thought that accrued earnings may have a bearing but again...that is not the case.

So does anyone know how the obvious variables (AGE, SEX, WEIGHT & alphabetical order) are prioritised?
Also, as they are already assigned their numbers before the draw, it has nothing to do with it - unlike in the USA.
A simple list of hierarchy would be appreciated...and there are some knowledgeable people on here.

I've plenty of experience with this sport but I've never got to the bottom of this mystery which would have
a tag-team of Edgar Wallace, Columbo & Charlie Chan baffled!

The French are notorious for being awkward and this looks like Exhibit 'A' for that assertionCrazy

It's listed by ownership names which is why you always see Aga Khan Studs first, and Wertheimer and Freire down the bottom.  It can still  be confusing as they don't always use the surname, if the owner is listed with a first letter only, such as D.Smith, they will take the D, but if listed as Derek Smith they will take the S.
It can be difficult to fathom.

Thanks Smoky - it's more than difficult...it's a Krypton Factor puzzle!
I didn't even consider factoring in such a meaningless variable.
