Watched this again today on BBC2, what a great courtroom drama this is, marvellous performances from Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich and all the supporting actors/actresses. If you have never seen it catch it on BBC I Player, terrific story imo.
I watched it as well, how good a character actor was Charles Laughton?, any film I've seen him in was very watchable, thought Tyrone Power was a touch wooden then way ott in this .

A marvellous character actor who never seems to get mentioned in greatest Actor lists but his performance in this film was terrific as was his Quasimodo. Agree that Tyrone Power wasn't that good as the defendant but some of the supporting cast were excellent as well. Would think that "Rumpole" may have been based on Laughtons barrister in this film. Snowymoon you are indeed correct about Billy Wilder, movies include Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Sunset Boulevard, Sabrina, The Apartment and Some like it hot. Quite a list of great films, written by Agatha Christie as a play and still showing in London now

We went to the live production in County Hall, site of the old GLC.
Absolutely sensational, the stage is set up like a courtroom and the atmosphere was gripping, tense and incredibly realistic - with a twist at the end naturally. One of the finest things you can do in London which as everyone knows is the greatest city on the planet and my hometown:

Agree, they're not giving those tickets away but that's the price of London theatre these days. We went to see Back To The Future (don't laugh, it was actually very good) in The Strand on Saturday and picked up front row seats on the day for £50 each. I appreciate that was easy for me because I live here but you can pick up last minute tickets either in Leicester Square or sites such as todaytix.com with huge savings.

Also saw this at the County Hall with the family a few years ago and totally agree. We walked out of there thinking we had witnessed something special
