British trainer running in the British Champion Stakes...seems logical
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 11:21 AM BST
He thumped Delacroix last time and he’s bottling?!

Will we see Delacroix after the Irish Champion?

Let’s see ….

The Irish have paid the travel expenses for SHIN Emperor such is their desperation to form a field for this G1.

Zarhann is also entered in the Prix Niel.

Easy to talk large when you likely know it won’t happen! Laugh

'We'll put the pace on and find out once and for all who the best horse is' - Aidan O'Brien wants Delacroix decider with Ombudsman

"I really hope he will come over," replied O'Brien when asked about round three of Ombudsman and Delacroix. "Sheikh Mohammed is probably the greatest sportsman we’ve ever seen and I know our men will be delighted if he comes over. We’d love him to come to Leopardstown and, if he does, it will be a proper race.

"We’ll try to run a pacemaker if John doesn’t and we’ll make it very straightforward. The pacemaker will go on and Delacroix can follow him and Ombudsman can follow Delacroix, if he wants! We’ll let them turn into the straight and see what happens from there. For the race and for everybody we want it to happen – win, lose or draw, we’ll be delighted.

Run a pacemaker like you did in the POW and King George? Laugh

Wasn’t there one in the race at York?

They know it’s horses for courses - it’s hometown advantage for Delacroix having won there twice this year.
Report Toffeegirl September 3, 2025 11:39 AM BST
O'Brien sends horses for all the top UK races but UK trainers scarcely send over any (especially during the NH season). Would have been intersting to see the 2 clash again but I'm not surprised at all.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 11:45 AM BST
Hmmmm I understand what you’re saying but here it’s easy pickings when he comes, that might be the reason!

I’d say outlining The Champion Stakes, The Breeders Cup and Japan Cup shows a lot of bottle. It’s an audacious plan and one that doesn’t play ball with their shatty ones.

BREAKING: Ombudsman will not run in the Irish Champion Stakes next Saturday and will now be freshened up for an autumn campaign targeting the Champion Stakes at Ascot, Breeders' Cup and Japan Cup.

Hopefully you were on Delacroix before the odds changes that came with the news.

Amnat is still a good yard stick should he turn up to give the race any cred.
Report Toffeegirl September 3, 2025 11:54 AM BST
I just like to see the best horses turn up in the best races, we have too much of trainers/owners avoiding each other and its at the detrement to the game which is already going down the drain fast.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 12:07 PM BST
I totally agree TG AoB has more than one that he could run here there’s only one Colt for Godolphin so you can see why they’ve chosen to do what they have.

I think all those races seem too much, but we’ll see.

These trainers cherry pick the best opportunities to win, when you don’t have the amo you have to be more selective.

I’m not a fan of NH but understand your dislike of British trainers ambition to travel there. You can understand that reluctance given the power houses based in Ireland.

What’s worse for British trainers and racing (like Nicholls) who does run in Ireland is that British owners are now sending horses to Ireland.
Eg the King following on from Cheveley Park etc… I forget the other recent owners sending horses to Mullins and not Nicki or Paul.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 12:14 PM BST
For me that’s a very bad sign for British jumps racing, because it’s not like those guys can’t train.

Henderson was a prime example with Constitution Hill, wouldnt go over when the horse was in top form and not sure what to expect from it this year.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 12:37 PM BST
It was madness and desperation to travel the horse when they did.

They have their preferred routes or pattern to Cheltenham and can understand why they’ve chosen not to travel before March.
Punchestown was an afterthought and not fair on the horse.

At the same time Hendo will say that they never sent State Man to face Constituion Hill and sent a scout instead in Lossiemouth.

I’m all for trainers who travel and think that it makes for exciting racing, sadly it seems it’s not happening as often as we’d like.

As has been already pointed out,why would you want to travel and face the certainty of team tactics by AOB?
If AOB truly wants to find out he could come Ascot.
The spacing of Gosden's plan is better for the horse

O'Brien said: "We want everyone to come. The more runners we have from everywhere means we will have more interest from all over the world. That way our horses and everyone else's can be gauged. It's from now on that the travelling roadshow starts, but we would love all these good horses to come to Leopardstown first."

Without them there’s little substance to the race.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 4:10 PM BST
This statement makes me think we might not see him, unless he tries the mile at Ascot for extra prestige?

'I can't tell you how important he is' - Aidan O'Brien on Coolmore's Eclipse hero Delacroix

"I can't tell you how important he is. The lads have been looking for a Dubawi all their life and he's out of a champion. He's a beautiful big horse with power, strength and everything you want. I am delighted for the lads that he has won," said O'Brien, who was registering a remarkable ninth win in the race.

Although his year-older Galileo half-sister Grateful won the Group 1 Prix de Royallieu over a mile and six last year, Delacroix failed to stay the Derby trip at Epsom last time out and Ryan Moore believes the colt has the speed to drop down in distance.
"I think ten furlongs is fine but if anything he would probably run shorter," commented the jockey who was winning the race for the third year in a row and the fifth time in his career.

"We have always held him in high regard right from his two-year-old days. He is out of a great racemare and by Dubawi and only time will tell how much they can step it up when they race."

The present trainers (Gosden senior included) are very unlike Sir Cecil and Sir Stoute or Mr Cumani or Mr Harwood. They do not have a firm itinerary for the star charges and often subject to media influence or after thought ie no set target.

Until Field Of Gold runs again and beats a distinguished Gp 1 field he cannot be compared in the same vein as Kingman or Baaeed let alone Frankel or Dancing Brave. Field Of Gold have beaten mediocrities so far.

In this instance Impossible I have to say that Gosden doesn’t plan for anyone but him and his horses. He’s targeted perfectly races like the Lockinge and has shown brilliant patience to win races with the horses picked for them.

The ground work goes back far and it’s something I look out for.

He plotted the POW and won it with a 33/1 shot, he’s under the radar value in the big G1’s.
Report Delashay September 3, 2025 5:40 PM BST
He spent a most  of (‘22) running Mostahdaf over 1m 4f then dropped him back to 10f, truly a great. Waiting a year for one race.
The public had forgotten his runs earlier that year at Sandown behind Bay Bridge and had him as a slow horse that was now needing 1m 4f.
Report impossible123 September 3, 2025 7:06 PM BST
Gosden has form. He'd So Mi Dar (2f) for the Epsom Oaks. The horse was a no show due to a slight injury. Gosden was adamant she'd be ok for the Irish equivalent. Again, no show, instead rerouted to France a few days later. Similarly, Jack Hobbs who was supposed to be running in the Coronation Cup but ended up in the PoW instead, and finished last. The excuse was the firm ground.

What irritates me is that John Gosden always has an excuse when his latest superstar gets beaten (again) Ombudsman ran right up to form but Field of Gold is just a decent 3yo miler who was way over rated. If the draw put him on the wrong side then find a jockey who can get him across to the other side. It was a straight mile with 16 runners for goodness sake.

It is one thing to make valid excuses but Gosden still seems to think that Field of Gold is the best miler around despite plenty of evidence that he is not. His defeat in the Guineas cost the jockey his job but has he improved since? He has been fourth and fifth in his only runs against older horses and the ones he beat in the Craven and the Irish GNS have hardly been advertising the form. Wimbledon Hawkeye has won a good race at Keeneland but Aomori City has since been gelded and Cosmic Year and Hotazhell have failed to win since he beat them.

I'm very surprised that Johnny G didn't withdraw Field of Gold from the QE2 yesterday, given that he knew he wasn't "match fit", he wouldn't run again this season, and therefore yesterday couldn't have been a prep run for an upcoming race.
