Two people taken to hospital after horse suffers fatal injury and crashes into racegoers at Cartmel
Two racegoers were taken to hospital for treatment after an incident during the meeting at Cartmel on Monday in which Wbee suffered a fatal injury.

The ten-year-old Wbee, trained by Gary Hanmer, appeared to go wrong before two out in the third race on the card, the 3m1½f handicap hurdle, and was pulled up quickly after the flight before crashing through the rails and colliding with spectators.

A statement released by the racecourse said: "Cartmel Racecourse can confirm that during the third race of today’s meeting a horse experienced a veterinary issue that caused it to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators.

"On-site medical teams responded immediately and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment.

"The horse, Wbee, received prompt veterinary attention on site but sadly did not recover."

The incident resulted in an hour-long delay to the Cavendish Cup, which was originally scheduled to go off at 4.05pm and was subsequently won by the Mickey Bowen-trained Olivers Travels.

A large crowd had descended on Cartmel on Bank Holiday Monday for the summer track’s final fixture of the season.

Among the many racegoers was former world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury, who was at the course to watch his two horses Big Gypsy King and Sea The Clouds, both of whom were beaten.
