Apprentice jockey arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm to fellow rider

An apprentice jockey has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) following an assault on a weighing room colleague this month.

Police were called to a residence in Exning, near Newmarket, on August 4 after reports that a man had been assaulted the previous evening. According to the police, the victim of the alleged assault “had attended hospital with serious facial injuries”.

The Racing Post understands the apprentice riders are attached to yards in Newmarket and have been receiving support since the incident from figures within the Professional Jockeys Association.

In a statement on Thursday, a spokesperson for Suffolk Police said: “A 21-year-old man was arrested on Monday, August 18 on suspicion of assault (GBH). He was subsequently bailed to return to police on Tuesday, November 18. The investigation continues.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police quoting crime reference 37/43761/25.”

GBH is a more serious form of assault, when harm caused to others can include injuries such as broken bones and deep wounds, or lacerations. Convictions can carry a prison sentence.
